Newmains and Morningside residents hit out over latest waste storage plans

Villagers have rounded on plans to use a former rail siding site in Morningside to store non-hazardous waste.

Proposals have been submitted to allow (as well as coal) sand, gravel, industrial and commercial waste to be stored, stockpiled and transported at the site.

The plans have already drawn the ire of many Morningside and Newmains residents with a public meeting behind held in St Brigid’s Church Hall in relation to the application.

Jav Yaqub was one local at the meeting.

He said: “There was a lot of strong feelings regarding this application.

“This is not the first time an application like this has been proposed.

“In 2009 a Scottish Government Reporter rejected a similar application and now we are back here again.”

Plans were also revived back in 2013 with those proposals also being scrapped.

There are 18 objections to the new plans which are available to view on the council’s website.

One objector, David Lang, said: “We have been here before. The land owners’ previous application was rejected and now it feels that we, the residents of Morningside, that is adjoining the area in question are going to forever spend our time constantly fighting this development. The railhead in question has been abandoned for many years and was supposed to have been dimantled.”

The move comes just weeks after a second controversial planning application, of 92 new homes set to be built, was taken by Mr Hill on appeal to the Scottish Government Reporter after the proposals were rejected by North Lanarkshire Council.

Morningside resident Kirsty Forrest said: “I think everyone has just had enough. People are tired of this.

“All the local residents enjoy using this space for walking. With very few free local amenities it’s great to take the kids a walk over the fields and see the deers and feed the swans.”
