Newly enforced restrictions will limit broadband users' ability to change their service

Openreach, the infrastructure provider for companies including BT and Sky, has suspended new installations.

The company - who also do essential works for EE, TalkTalk and Giganet - will instead divert their attention on 'essential works' designed to keep internet users connected during this unprecedentedly busy period.

An Openreach spokesman told the BBC: "We're advising our engineers not to complete any work inside a property unless it would leave a vulnerable customer with no form of connection."

Openreach did, however, confirm that - in many cases - customers can complete some home installations themselves.

The website broadbandchoices.co.uk says, in line with information in the statement Openreach gave to the BBC, that "the main part of switching doesn't usually happen with your home".

"It's usually just a case of plugging in your router once the connection is live," they add.

One of the most flexible options on the market is Now TV’s broadband, largely recognised as one of the most flexible options on the market, say that they will offer step-by-step instructions to customers looking to switch from other providers.

In terms of value and deals, BT are currently offering an £80 Reward Card on their most popular broadband deals.

One company not under the Openreach restrictions, VirginMedia, say that they will continue to install new connections for customers, asking those exhibiting flu-like symptoms to reschedule appointments.

They are incentivising new customers with a £75 bill credit. The same amount is also being offered by Plusnet.
