Newly elected Taoiseach Micheal Martin serenaded by neighbours as he makes emotional return to Cork

This is the moment an emotional Micheal Martin was serenaded by neighbours as he made an emotional return to his hometown in Cork.

The newly elected Taoiseach was beaming as his family and friends welcomed Martin home as leader of the country.

Martin could be seen thanking his supporters as crowds sang the traditional Cork folk song 'The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee' in footage captured by Cork's 96fm.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday Mr Martin said his homecoming was "very special"

"It's been a great oasis for me to be in the midsts of such wonderful people."

The Fianna Fail leader was elected as Ireland's 15th Taoiseach after being voted in by TDs on Saturday afternoon.

Members of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green Party overwhelmingly voted in favour of the Programme for Government on Friday, which was set out last week.

TDs from all parties then gathered in the National Convention Centre this morning and a majority of 93 votes backed the proposal to have Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin step into the top job.

Meanwhile outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is set to take up the position of Tanaiste as the two Civil War parties enter a historic coalition.

During his speech to the Dail on the weekend the Taoiseach said emphasised the new government still face the challenge of coronavirus in the coming months.

He said: "There were many things said during this debate which should normally be replied to, but I think it is more important to move forward.

"There is no question what our most urgent work is.

"We are meeting away from our permanent chamber because of a historic pandemic which has struck Ireland and the rest of the world.

"As of today, 2,278 people on this island have lost their lives.

"Many thousands more have fought a long struggle to recover.

"There is no community, no part of our country which has escaped untouched."
