Newest member of Avon and Somerset police named Hero in honour of NHS workers

The newest member of Avon and Somerset Constabulary's mounted section has been officially named as Hero to honour NHS staff.

The force said the horse's name will act as a "lasting tribute to NHS colleagues".

Speaking during a Facebook Live on Thursday (16 April) Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said police horses were normally named after places in Avon and Somerset.

But this time the force was breaking with tradition to honour NHS staff and carers.

During this afternoon's webcast it was also revealed that there have been 11,000 potential lockdown breaches reported to the police force since the lockdown began last month.

“I would like to say a massive thank you to anyone who has changed their behaviour quite dramatically over the last few weeks,” she said.

“I know it’s hard. We can’t be complacent. We have to continue.

“We will look back on this and think, what did we do to play our part? How did we support the community and the NHS?"
