Newcastle woman tells of joy after scooping £60,000 on Postcode Lottery

A lucky Tyneside woman has scooped £60,000 in the People’s Postcode Lottery.

The postcode NE15 8RS was drawn as the Street Prize winner of the People's Postcode Lottery on Wednesday, and Lorraine Hartley, 61, was the only person in the area with a ticket.

Lorraine, of Lemington, Newcastle, said: "Me and my husband absolutely couldn't believe it when we got the call saying the Postcode Lottery team were coming round – I still can't now.

"I think we need to let it sink in before we decide what to do with it. We're going to tell our son first of all.

"We wanted to play for the charity side of it as well – it's really important to us to support people less fortunate."

The prize is part of the lottery's special summer campaign in which one postcode is announced every day throughout its July draws and everyone who plays in it wins £30,000 for every ticket they play with. Lorraine won double the prize because she plays with two tickets.

Judie McCourt, People’s Postcode Lottery ambassador, presented Lorraine with her cheque.

She said: "Huge congratulations to Lorraine and Alan. I'm so pleased for them and hope they treat themselves with the cash.”

A minimum of 32% of ticket sales goes directly to charities and good causes. Players of the lottery have helped raise more than £450m to date for projects across Britain and internationally.

This draw was promoted on behalf of Postcode Support Trust, which funds charities that are supporting older people to participate fully in their community and helping them to live happy and more fulfilled lives.

Scotswood natural community garden is one of the North East good causes that players have supported.

In 2019, they were awarded £20,000 to teach school children about the environment. These workshops were given to 1,400 schools and designed to inspire children to look after the environment.
