Newcastle warned not to copy Man City transfer mistake with Robinho

Newcastle have been urged not to follow Manchester City’s example by signing superstars in their first summer transfer window under new ownership.

The Magpies are expected to be one of the busiest sides in the transfer market over the coming months, and splashing the cash will be no issue for them following their Saudi-backed takeover. Eddie Howe’s side made the most of their new-found wealth during January with a number of new additions which ultimately helped in them finishing well clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

With more time to do their business now, plenty of big names have been linked with moves to the north-east. Former Newcastle defender Jose Enrique though has warned his old side to learn from City’s mistakes.

The Blues found themselves in a similar situation following their takeover by the Abu Dhabi Group in 2008. Sheikh Mansour announced his arrival by making the signing of Real Madrid star Robinho to declare his intent to challenge the Premier League’s big guns.

Having initially impressed though, the Brazilian’s time at the Etihad proved to be a slight disappointment, and he sent out on loan to Santos just 18 months later. Enrique hopes Newcastle can learn from City’s early errors in the window.

He told Genting Casino : “It would be a massive mistake for them to go for Neymar or Pogba. I don’t think Eddie Howe will go for these kinds of players.

“Pogba doesn’t suit Newcastle and Howe will look for a more aggressive, high-intensity player. It will be similar to when Man City signed Robinho, it didn’t work out and I know the fans would love these players, but they’ll go for the money and not the project.”
