Newcastle wait for Premier League next move after La Liga suspended 'indefinitely'

Newcastle United and their Premier League counterparts could be forced to play the waiting game even longer after concerns over the April 30 return date increased.

As Spain's La Liga announced today that they had scrapped the idea of returning in mid-May and suspended the competition "indefinitely", it now remains to be seen whether the Premier League follow their lead.

La Liga and the Spanish FA released a joint statement to announce there is now no return date for the competition.

It read: "The Monitoring Commission established by the current RFEF-LaLiga Coordination Agreement agrees the suspension of professional football competitions until the authorities of the Government of Spain and the General Administration of the State consider that they can be resumed without creating any health risk.

"Both the RFEF and LaLiga wish to express our greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to the Spanish people and also share our condolences for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of football to the many families that are losing loved ones."

As revealed by the Chronicle, the Magpies' scheduled return date of March 30 to the club's training ground has now been moved to April.

Fixtures are currently scheduled to move to the first weekend in May but with the government hinting at 12-week isolation periods for the public, this is questionable.

However, it is believed that most Premier League clubs are eager to complete the 2019/20 season no matter how long it takes, and making the league "null and void" has been dismissed despite suggestions from West Ham's Karen Brady to end the current campaign as it stood before the enforced break.
