Cristian Romero was the Tottenham hero as he returned from suspension with two goals to salvage a 2-2 draw for his side against Newcastle. Bruno Guimaraes’ opening goal and Anthony Gordon’s penalty should have been enough to claim all three points for Eddie Howe’s side, a result which would have seen them leapfrog their opponents into the top half of the Premier League table. Thomas Frank had been at odds with his own fanbase in the week after Spurs fans had booed Guglielmo Vicario, their goalkeeper, and another poor performance - despite the late drama - will not go down well with the travelling support.
The north Londoners were second best at St James’ Park throughout, and they should have been behind at the interval when Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade both went close for the Magpies. Harvey Barnes and Lewis Hall were livewires down the left, with Barnes stinging Vicario’s palms in the second period. Lucas Bergvall went close with an improvised backflick that whizzed over the crossbar, but that was as close as Spurs would come until late on. Guimaraes, rested from the starting XI by Howe, was introduced to great effect at half-time, and he made an instant impact, placing a beauty into the corner from Nick Woltemade’s lay-off after Gordon, another second-period replacement, had skinned Pedro Porro. Spurs were level when the returning Cristian Romero stooped lowest, stealing in at the near post to direct a header beyond Aaron Ramsdale.
The visitors were not level for long, as VAR adjudged Rodrigo Bentancur to have manhandled Dan Burn in the box, and Anthony Gordon stroked home the resulting spot-kick. However, with five minutes of injury time played, it was Romero who produced the heroics once more, as he acrobatically shinned an effort into the corner from a melee in the home box. Cue scenes of elation in the heavens on Tyneside, but it is a result that still leaves Spurs without a win in five. Both sides remain marooned in the bottom half of the table, with Frank’s side 11th, and the Magpies 13th.

Goal! Newcastle 2-2 Tottenham
22:08 , Oli Gent90+5 mins: What a goal! Spurs are level at the death, and it’s sensational from Romero! There is a melee in the Newcastle box with bodies everywhere, and Romero shins an overhead effort into the net!
Matt Verri reports
22:00 , Oli Gent88 mins: Micky van de Ven furious on the touchline with the fourth official and I think he has a case. That's not a penalty - certainly not one that should be overturned by VAR.
Goal! Newcastle 2-1 Tottenham
21:59 , Oli Gent86 mins: Gordon scores, and the Toon are ahead once more! Controversy!
Newcastle 1-1 Tottenham
21:58 , Oli Gent85 mins: Gordon has grabbed the ball, but is it a ploy? Who will take this? Woltemade has it in his hands now, but it will be the former Everton forward who will hit this. Not good for my FPL.
Newcastle 1-1 Tottenham
21:57 , Oli Gent84 mins: Penalty! The Toon have a spot-kick, and Romero leads the protests!
Newcastle 1-1 Tottenham
21:56 , Oli Gent83 mins: An on-field review is happening here... Bentancur was looking at the man and not the ball from the Newcastle corner as Dan Burn went over...
Matt Verri reports
21:53 , Oli Gent81 mins: Well then! Romero stayed up front and he's headed Spurs level. How ambitious are they feeling in these final 10 minutes or so?
Goal! Newcastle 1-1 Tottenham
21:52 , Oli Gent79 mins: Spurs are level, and Romero on his return has it! Kudus stands up Hall, and the Argentine gets across Burn at the near post to direct a header into the corner!
Matt Verri reports
21:50 , Oli Gent78 mins: Kolo Muani and Bergvall have been Spurs' two best players in attack but they make way. Frank you'd imagine will point to fatigue but think at least one of them should have stayed on.
Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham
21:50 , Oli Gent78 mins: Tel, Richarlison, and Simons are on for Bergvall, Kolo Muani, and Johnson.
Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham
21:48 , Oli Gent76 mins: Good save! The ball dribbles across the box and breaks for Miley who strikes, but Vicario gets down well to save.
Matt Verri reports
21:46 , Oli Gent74 mins: Here come the cavalry. Spurs concede and Frank immediately had Tel, Simons and Richarlison ready to come on. Kitchen sink time.
Goal! Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham
21:44 , Oli Gent71 mins: It’s there, and Newcastle finally break the deadlock. It has been coming, and it’s Bruno Guimaraes. A beautifully-placed finish. Gordon does well to skin Porro, and slides it across for Woltemade, who knocks it back for the onrushing Guimaraes, who places it into the corner.
Matt Verri reports
21:41 , Oli Gent70 mins: After a good spell, it's back to Spurs being on the ropes. Match suddenly feels very open and not sure that's helping the visitors. Newcastle have the pace to exploit it.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:39 , Oli Gent67 mins: Anthonys Elanga and Gordon are on for Barnes and Murphy.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:38 , Oli Gent66 mins: Corner, Newcastle. The danger isn’t over for Spurs, though, as Vicario paws away the delivery and Livramento strikes from range, but it’s blocked well by Johnson on the line!
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:37 , Oli Gent64 mins: That is some pass from Guimaraes to send Murphy away from a counter that stemmed from Ramsdale bowling it out quickly. He cannons one into Porro, and the chance is gone.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:33 , Oli Gent61 mins: We’ve played an hour but we are still no nearer to that elusive opening goal. Newcastle are looking the more likely to find it, but Spurs are having a better spell...
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:30 , Oli Gent58 mins: Some better possession for Spurs in the last couple of minutes as they work it nicely from right to left. Newcastle sitting off them, but ready to pounce on the smallest of mistakes...
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:27 , Oli Gent54 mins: Spurs are under the cosh once more from the Newcastle corners. A barrage of balls being swung into the visiting box, usually right on top of Vicario, and the Italian has to tip the latest one over.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:25 , Oli Gent52 mins: More sloppy play from Spurs as Udogie loses possession all too easily. Guimaraes is caught late by Sarr, who gets a talking to from the referee.
Matt Verri reports
21:21 , Oli Gent49 mins: This time the Spurs defenders do decide to cover for Vicario on the line. Danso gets himself into a great position and is there to head away Woltemade's effort. Spurs under big pressure early in the half.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:20 , Oli Gent48 mins: Close! Twice Spurs escape as Barnes is denied by Vicario after Hall wins the ball. Woltemade wins the second header, but Danso clears off the line!
Kick off!
21:18 , Oli Gent46 mins: We’re back underway.
Half time change
21:18 , Oli GentBruno Guimaraes has replaced Sandro Tonali.
HT: Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:03 , Oli GentGoalless at the break. Joelinton has hit the post, and Lucas Bergvall has gone close with a backflick. But there is still nothing to split these two. What will the second half have in store?
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:00 , Oli Gent45+1 min: One added minute.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
21:00 , Oli Gent45 mins: Corner, Newcastle. Barnes has been the real shining light of this first half. The winger drifts infield and gets the shot away in the D, and it deflects behind for a corner... until the flag is up against Woltemade.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:57 , Oli Gent42 mins: Still no real openings for either side, and neither goalkeeper has been forced into a real save so far.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:52 , Oli Gent37 mins: Close! Bergvall goes agonisingly close after the Kudus cross. A cheeky, improvised flick that just whizzes over the bar!
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:50 , Oli Gent35 mins: Off the post! The closest Newcastle have come as Spurs escape. A great run from Joelinton to evade Bentancur, and from the angle, he hits the foot of the post! The hosts can’t capitalise on the rebound, and the ball eventually ricochets into Vicario’s gloves!
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:48 , Oli Gent34 mins: Hall is robbed by Kudus, but the Ghanaian is brushed aside by Tonali, who wins it straight back for the Toon.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:44 , Oli Gent31 mins: It’s in towards Thiaw, but Bentancur hacks it away.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:44 , Oli Gent30 minutes: Corner, Newcastle. Good from Joelinton as he makes a dart for the left byline and wins the set piece. Miley is over this one.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:42 , Oli Gent28 mins: Newcastle are showing far more bite in the final third, but they’re just lacking in that final ball. Again, another goes awry as Miley overcooks one looking for Woltemade.
Matt Verri reports
20:39 , Oli Gent25 mins: Romero has looked off it so far and he's now been booked on his return from suspension. Sloppy on the ball and rash in the challenge isn't a great combination.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:38 , Oli Gent23 mins: Romero is shown a yellow card.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:37 , Oli Gent22 mins: Tonali is down hurt after a collision with Bentancur. Nothing doing card-wise, however.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:33 , Oli Gent18 mins: Close! A first effort on goal as Newcastle win the ball in the Spurs half again. Barnes drives through the heart of the visiting defence and looks for Miley to his right. The midfielder strikes, but it’s straight down the throat of Vicario.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:31 , Oli Gent16 mins: Barnes is causing Porro problems down the Newcastle left. The Spaniard is having some trouble containing the winger so far.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:27 , Oli Gent13 mins: Well defended by Hall at the near post. It comes for Kudus in the second phase, but his right-footed cross is shanked into the stands.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:27 , Oli Gent12 mins: Corner, Tottenham. It’s the visitors’ turn to whip one into the box as the initial set piece is flicked behind by Tonali, who thinks he’s been fouled. Kudus is over this one, and here comes the inswinger...
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:24 , Oli Gent9 mins: Corner, Newcastle. Mistake from Porro as the ball ricochets for Barnes. He looks for support inside and it comes for Woltemade as the hosts put together some nice one-touch play. The German looks to dink it in for Joelinton, but it’s forced behind. The delivery is poor, however, and Vicario deals with it.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:22 , Oli Gent7 mins: Good defending from Hall as Spurs break at pace. Johnson looks for Kudus with the low cross, but the left-back comes across well on the slide to knock it out for a corner... until Thiaw keeps it in play and prevents the set piece.
Matt Verri reports
20:20 , Oli Gent6 mins: Newcastle on top early on. Spurs have gone long pretty much every time - the one time they didn't Romero tried to dribble out and lost it on his own byline.
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:19 , Oli Gent5 mins: It’s been a high-octane opening from Newcastle in these early exchanges. Another cross is whipped in, this time from Murphy, and Woltemade loses Romero and nods wide!
Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham
20:18 , Oli Gent3 mins: Newcastle make the faster start as Barnes picks it up down the left. He looks for Woltemade in the middle, but Spurs scramble it clear.
Kick off!
20:14 , Oli Gent1 min: We are underway.
Matt Verri reports
20:10 , Oli GentSpurs are actually above Newcastle in the table but there is a very different vibe at these clubs right now. Fair to say Eddie Howe has much more credit in the bank. Also helps that Newcastle have won six home matches in a row - Spurs have won three Premier League home matches in the last 12 months.
Five minute warning!

Spurs handed double injury boost
19:45 , Oli GentThomas Frank may have been handed a useful boost to his defence if he is stressing about his centre-backs’ minutes.
He has been able to welcome back two long-term absentees to first-team training this week, but who?
Frank on team selection
19:35 , Oli Gent“Micky is a super important player,” the Dane said.
“This is the fourth game in ten days, with the shortest turnaround, 2-2-2, the third away game out of the four. So it's just making sure we keep the freshness, the energy in the team.
“It's the same with Richarlison. Richy and Micky started three games in a row. So now we need fresh players on the pitch. I think it's fair to say they've never been fitter the last three years than they are now.”
Matt Verri reports
19:27 , Oli GentVan de Ven on the bench tonight due to the Spurs wanting to manage his minutes. No injury issue. Do feel like his pace will be missed though on the cover against a very mobile Newcastle attack.
Matt Verri reports
19:12 , Oli GentHardly any point trying to predict these Thomas Frank lineups. Micky van de Ven surprisingly on the bench for Spurs tonight and there's a start out of nowhere for Brennan Johnson. What is becoming predictable is Xavi Simons not starting. Four matches in a row he's been among the subs.

Frank knows what to change to avoid another defeat
18:45 , Oli GentThe trees are going up around the country and Christmas music is hard to escape, but Thomas Frank can be forgiven for not feeling too much festive cheer, Matt Verri writes.
As the pressure mounts and with headlines honing in on a strained relationship with the Tottenham supporters, a second trip to Newcastle in a little over a month is unlikely to have been high up on Frank's Christmas list.
Newcastle vs Tottenham odds

Standard Sport prediction
18:25 , Oli GentNewcastle are, somehow, below Spurs in the Premier League table heading into this game, despite a thumping win at Everton over the weekend, underlining how their poor start has somewhat gone under the radar. It was their first away win of the season, and brings the momentum into the game.
Spurs, meanwhile, could not be more deflated, with the Spurs manager and player Pedro Porro publicly decrying the toxic atmosphere in N17. Will an away game, therefore, came at the right time? Spurs have four of their six away league games this season, so know how to get the job done.
Newcastle, though, have proven that they have Spurs’ number of late, and an early goal - just like in the Carabao Cup meeting between the two sides in October - will likely have a huge say on proceedings.
Newcastle to win, 2-0.
Tottenham team news
18:15 , Oli GentTottenham came through the Fulham defeat unscathed, but it remains to be seen how Thomas Frank sets up. Newcastle are relatively toothless against low blocks, but another defensive display will not be accepted.
Rodrigo Bentancur replaced Joao Palhinha on Saturday, and Frank may be tempted to play the pair together again as a much-maligned midfield duo. Djed Spence will be pushing to start, while captain Cristian Romero is available again after suspension.
Randal Kolo Muani was against the brightest spark for Spurs so he should keep his place in attack. Xavi Simons has been forced to settle for a substitute role of late, but could be thrown in from the start, though Lucas Bergvall did enough against Fulham to keep his place.
Newcastle team news
18:05 , Oli GentNewcastle are sweating over three star names, with first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope still a doubt after missing the win at Everton with a knock.
Sven Botman, who is struggling with an issue in his lower back, is set to see a specialist, so a return from injury remains unclear, while summer signing Yoane Wissa is back in training but unlikely to feature.
