Newcastle vs Tottenham LIVE: Carabao Cup result, latest updates and reaction after Spurs crash out

Newcastle vs Tottenham LIVE - (AFP via Getty Images)

Newcastle vs Tottenham LIVE

Tottenham exited the Carabao Cup with a whimper on Wednesday night as they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle at St James’ Park. Thomas Frank made the trip to the north-east without 11 first-team players but still named a fairly strong squad for the match. The visitors were off the boil from the first whistle, though, as Newcastle made a fast start. Just when it seemed Spurs had weathered the early storm, they suddenly found themselves behind. With Djed Spence out of position as he tied his shoelaces, Fabian Schar headed home from Sandro Tonali’s corner to open the scoring.

Spurs managed to keep the deficit at one come half-time, but Nick Woltemade made it two just five minutes into the second-half. He got his head to Joe Willock’s cross, rising higher than the flapping Antonin Kinsky to double his side’s advantage. Tottenham threw the kitchen sink at the match, introducing fresh firepower in the form of Mohammed Kudus and Randal Kolo Muani off the bench, but they could not fight back into the tie.

Newcastle will host Fulham in the quarter-final. Catch up on the action as it happened below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Matt Verri at St James’ Park.

Matt Verri at St James' Park

21:13 , Arthur Ferridge

GOAL! Newcastle 2-0 Tottenham | Woltemade '50

At long last, it is a second for Newcastle! A deft header home from Woltemade gets the better of a flapping Kinsky, who comes to claim the cross and completely misses it.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

21:09 , Arthur Ferridge

9mins: Richarlison looks to skin Thiaw on the edge of the box, but runs into a brick wall. He’s had a tough evening.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

21:07 , Arthur Ferridge

47mins: Palhinha with a tidy pirouette to escape the Newcastle press. He succeeds but Kinsky’s long ball out finds Burn and Newcastle attack. Willock misses wide from inside the six-yard box. Another howler from the Magpies.

21:05 , Arthur Ferridge

45mins: No changes for either side at the break.

2ND HALF: Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

21:04 , Arthur Ferridge

Back underway at St James’ Park.

HALF TIME: Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:49 , Arthur Ferridge

Simons shoots from range and Ramsdale appears to tip it over the bar, but no corner is given. That does it for the first half!

Several chances for both sides, but one goal is the difference at St James’ Park.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:48 , Arthur Ferridge

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:48 , Arthur Ferridge

45+1mins: Thiaw goes in very late with what those of a Geordie persuasion would probably call a professional foul. Spurs fans would probably go for ‘cynical’. He is booked.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:46 , Arthur Ferridge

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:43 , Arthur Ferridge

41mins: How on Earth has that stayed out! Another damning miss from Barnes as Tonali clips a sweet cross in to Thiaw, who plays it back across the box to Barnes. He has an open goal but shoots over from inside the six-yard box.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:41 , Arthur Ferridge

39mins: Danso looks to curl one from the edge of the box, but doesn’t seem to quite get the direction on it he wanted. Easy stop for Ramsdale. That is Spurs’ first shot on target.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:40 , Arthur Ferridge

38mins: To be fair to them, in spite of this mini Spurs resurgence, Newcastle are holding firm. Burn and Schar are doing well in defence.

Matt Verri at St James' Park

20:39 , Arthur Ferridge

Much better spell this for Spurs. Bergvall getting more involved and the visitors are getting in down the sides of the Newcastle defence. Need Richarlison to get in the right place - he's just missed out a couple of times.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:38 , Arthur Ferridge

37mins: Spurs have had 71% of possession over the last ten minutes. So much better from them, but still a goal evades them.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:36 , Arthur Ferridge

35mins: Another gilt-edge chance for Spurs as the ball is worked nicely to Johnson, who plays a great cross for Richarlison, but again the Brazilian can’t quite reach it.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:34 , Arthur Ferridge

33mins: A sweet passing move from Spurs ends as Bergvall’s cross is just barely behind Richarlison. Newcastle break, but Danso pulls Elanga back cynically to cut the attack short. He is duly booked.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:31 , Arthur Ferridge

29mins: The Newcastle goal seems to have given Spurs a bit of a shot in the arm. Definitely looking a little more lively since.

They come forward, and Ramsdale shoots well off his line to clear it away. He must be bored with what little action he’s had so far.

Matt Verri at St James' Park

20:27 , Arthur Ferridge

Frank absolutely furious with that. Spence took forever to put his boot back on as Newcastle waited to take a corner. As soon as he got up, Tonali swung it in and Schar scored. Spurs adamant Spence should have been allowed to get back into position.

Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham

20:27 , Arthur Ferridge

26mins: Richarlison is booked for dissent in the aftermath of the goal.

GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Tottenham | Schar '24

20:26 , Arthur Ferridge

There’s the opener, and you can’t say they don’t deserve it. Schar heads home from Tonali’s corner - textbook stuff..

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:25 , Arthur Ferridge

23mins: Elanga’s cross is nowhere near any black-and-white shirted striker, but Danso puts it behind just to be safe.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:23 , Arthur Ferridge

22mins: Spurs seem to have settled a bit here. Newcastle have eased off the gas a tad.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:21 , Arthur Ferridge

20mins: Schar gets on the ball about 35 yards out and the home crowd implore him to shoot. The 33-year-old centre-back thinks better of it.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:20 , Arthur Ferridge

18mins: Ramsey brings Simons down again - his second such offence in the past few minutes.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:18 , Arthur Ferridge

17mins: Spurs can’t do much right at the minute. They lose the ball in midfield again and Newcastle break apace, but Tonali’s cross is blocked behind for a corner by Bentancur.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:17 , Arthur Ferridge

15mins: Spurs make a rare foray forward, but Johnson’s shot-come-cross from a very tight angle bends unthreateningly behind Ramsdale’s goal.

Matt Verri at St James' Park

20:15 , Arthur Ferridge

Frank has screamed at his players to calm down on about five different occasions. The most recent of them was followed by Porro launching it long straight to Ramsdale. Spurs haven't got going yet.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:13 , Arthur Ferridge

12mins: How is that not the opener! A lovely build-up from Newcastle including a deft dummy from Woltemade has Barnes ready to shoot in acres of space, but he fires wide of the post.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:12 , Arthur Ferridge

11mins: Johnson attempts to tackle Ramsey and gives away a free-kick, but seems to have hurt himself in the process. He lands awkwardly and yelps as he does so, but Simons picks him up and he will carry on.

9mins: Spurs break now, but Richarlison sees his shot blocked.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:07 , Arthur Ferridge

5mins: Willock gets a shot off from Tonali’s cross, but Spurs deal with it - just about. A little scrappy from the visitors, but they clear their lines.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:06 , Arthur Ferridge

4mins: Another Newcastle free-kick as Porro goes in late on Barnes.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:05 , Arthur Ferridge

3mins: Newcastle win a free-kick in the middle of the pitch, some 30 yards from goal. It is played wide to Elanga, who can only win a throw-in.

Matt Verri at St James' Park

20:04 , Arthur Ferridge

Looks like Bergvall could be on the left for Spurs, where we expected Simons to be. When they have the ball, Spence is pushing right up on that wing too and Bergvall tucks inside. Fluid formation early on.

Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:03 , Arthur Ferridge

1min: Spurs come forward for the first time through Djed Spence, who runs into traffic in the corner and recycles. A ball is played in behind for Johnson, but he doesn’t have the legs to get on the end of it. Tentative start.

KICK-OFF! Newcastle 0-0 Tottenham

20:01 , Arthur Ferridge

After Remembrance Day wreaths are laid in the centre circle and the Last Post is played, we are UNDERWAY!

Newcastle are in their traditional stripes, and Spurs in a yellow change strip.

Matt Verri at St James' Park

19:56 , Arthur Ferridge

Tottenham named a five-man leadership group earlier this season. Three of them are injured, one hasn't travelled and the other is on the bench. It means Pedro Porro captains the side tonight.

The players are out...

19:55 , Arthur Ferridge

Kick-off is imminent!

One more reminder...

19:53 , Arthur Ferridge

Just to say, there is no VAR tonight, and if we are tied at full-time, the match will go straight to a penalty shootout. No extra time!

The quarter-final draw will take place after the full-time whistle.

Not long to go...

19:50 , Arthur Ferridge

With ten minutes left until kick-off, here’s a reminder of how both sides line up tonight.

Newcastle XI: Ramsdale; Thiaw, Burn, Krafth, Schar; Ramsey, Tonali, Elanga; Barnes, Willock, Woltemade

Tottenham XI: Kinsky; Porro, Danso, Palhinha, Spence; Bentancur, Sarr; Johnson, Bergvall, Xavi; Richarlison

Tottenham's away form

19:44 , Arthur Ferridge

While Tottenham have a shaky recent record against Newcastle, they are among the nation’s best teams when playing away from home.

They have the best away record of any Premier League side so far this campaign, winning four and drawing one of their five road trip matches.

Thomas Frank on Archie Gray's absence

Thomas Frank explains Archie Gray’s absence: "Archie picked up a calf strain, unfortunately, so he's not available tonight."

Eddie Howe previews the tie

19:36 , Arthur Ferridge

Eddie Howe on starting Nick Woltemade, paying back the fans’ faith, and beating Thomas Frank.

“Keeping (Nick) in the rythm. I think he wants to play. How long can he play? We have to wait and see. Another experience against a Premier League team will do him a lot of good.

“Last year we had some difficult fixtures. We have a great crowd here, we want to do them justice, and hopefully we get through to the next round.

“[Thomas Frank’s] teams are very well organised, especially on set plays. I think they will try to dominate midfield. We need to gain control of the game, execute what we want to do well.”

About last night...

19:32 , Arthur Ferridge

Two Premier League sides were in Carabao Cup action last night.

Fulham required a penalty shootout to edge past Wycombe Wanderers, with Marco Silva later bemoaning the club’s injuries and his lack of squad depth.

Brentford had a better evening, producing a 5-0 rout of giant killers Grimsby Town.

Sandro Tonali speaks to Sky Sports

19:28 , Arthur Ferridge

According to Sandro Tonali, Newcastle are out to retain their Carabao Cup title.

“I think a lot because last season, every game we play for a win again,” he said. “We play to win every game. Tonight we know is a very tough game because we play against a very good team.”

Kinsky between the sticks

19:24 , Arthur Ferridge

While Ramsdale starts for Newcastle, Spurs also look to their second-string ‘keeper.

It is just his 12th start for Spurs, and his second of the season. He last made the starting XI against Doncaster Rovers in the previous round of the Carabao Cup.

Djed Spence previews the tie...

19:13 , Arthur Ferridge

Djed Spence hopes Tottenham can keep their good away form alive with a win this evening.

He tells Sky Sports: “I think we just focus on our game and try to give our best. Hopefully tonight we can try to keep our away form going and get a win.

“Newcastle are a good team. They are a good side with good players, but we are here to challenge and get through to the next round.”

The big question was when Frank was going to rest Van de Ven and Kudus - both are among the substitutes tonight. That means Palhinha has to fill in at centre-back and Johnson gets another go on the right wing. With Gray missing out injured, that bench is looking increasingly thin

Newcastle's new No9

18:40 , Arthur Ferridge

Nick Woltemade has made a mighty impression since joining Newcastle from Stuttgart this summer.

Facing the unenviable prospect of filling Alexander Isak’s shoes, he has started fast. The towering German has tallied four goals in six Premier League appearances.

A recent Spurs trip to the north-east...

18:30 , Arthur Ferridge

One of Tottenham’s more forgettable trips to Tyneside came back in April 2023.

With Cristian Stellini in the dugout, they were beaten 6-1.

Spurs trailed by three with just nine minutes played, and were five behind by half-time. Jacob Murphy scored a remarkable brace in that match - can he come back to haunt Spurs in the Cup tonight?

Form chart

18:20 , Arthur Ferridge

Recent results do not read kindly for Spurs, who have won only one of their last six meetings with Newcastle.

They last won at St James’ Park just over four years ago, in October 2021.

Standard Sport prediction

18:10 , Arthur Ferridge

Newcastle will get confidence from their recent record against Spurs, but the visiting team on Wednesday is made of far sterner stuff than those who have rocked up of late.

Under Thomas Frank, Spurs have won four and drawn one of five away games in the Premier League - and were unlucky not to beat Paris Saint-Germain away from home in the Super Cup before the season began.

But much will be decided on twhich team Frank selects, as he will need to rotate somewhat with Chelsea to come on Saturday night and the most likely place is to weaken the midfield - which is where Newcastle are at their strongest.

Newcastle win on penalties after a 2-2 draw

Newcastle early team news

18:00 , Arthur Ferridge

Sandro Tonali shook off a knock at the weekend to see out Newcastle’s narrow win over Fulham, so should start on Wednesday in a midfield three of Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes. Further back, there could be a change in centre-back pairing, with Fabian Schar pushing to start ahead of Sven Botman, who suffered a knock of his own on Saturday.

Anthony Elanga has really struggled since his £55million summer move, so could be afforded a chance from the off, while Harvey Barnes is also due a start. Nick Woltemade should keep his place up front.

Tottenham early team news

17:50 , Arthur Ferridge

For Tottenham, Archie Gray is reportedly the latest Spurs player to suffer an injury. Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are close to returns but are still sidelined. A busy treatment room somewhat restricts Frank’s options, but Pape Sarr and Lucas Bergvall could come in to give two of Rodrigo Bentancur, Joao Palhinha and Xavi Simons a rest.

Randal Kolo Muani impressed without scoring against Everton, but looked tired before being replaced by Richarlison so may settle for a spot on the bench. Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso will surely start at centre-back given Frank’s limited alternatives.
