A brace from Harvey Barnes was enough for Newcastle to secure a standout win against Manchester City to damage the visitors’ burgeoning title hopes.
Both sides traded early blows from practically the opening whistle as Barnes and Haaland missed early chances, and that set the tone for a superb 90.
The same duo were guilty of missing two brilliant chances later on, with Barnes missing a sitter from a few yards out and Haaland hitting straight at Pope as both sides spurned huge opportunities and the first half ended level.
And while the second half started with less intensity, it burst into life all of a sudden with three goals in a seven-minute spell that came to settle the match.
Barnes opened the scoring with a superbly placed effort into the corner, though Ruben Dias equalised just two minutes later as he squeezed in a shot following pinball in the box.
However neither side had time to take stock before the Newcastle man found the winner, bagging his brace by bundling in Guimaraes’ rebound to life the Magpies into 14th in the Premier League.

More from Howe
21:00 , Chris WilsonThis is what Howe said to Sky after a huge win:
"We are delighted to win today. I think the heart, endeavour and attitude of our performance today, when you compare it to Brentford when we looked tired and flat, that was a big upturn in terms of the normal way we play. That will give us a massive lift in what is a tough Premier League season this year. That should give us a lift for the games to come.
"Whatever strategy you pick, Manchester City will have chances against that. In the first 30 seconds, Harvey has a chance to score and you know you are on a knife edge like we were at times today. It is hard to keep Haaland quiet for 98 minutes."
On Bruno Guimaraes, he adds: "I think he is an outstanding player. He is a brilliant leader and very positive person. You are looking for your leaders to set the standard. I thought he was at the heartbeat of a lot of our play."
"We fell a long way short of our standards and now the task is to keep that identity away from home."
Howe: 'We were brave'
20:40 , Chris WilsonEddie Howe spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live after the match too, and he had this to say:
“That doesn't sound good that, 19 games. I'm well aware of my record against Manchester City, that is something I take no pride in really. Trying to figure out a way to beat them is very, very difficult.
"Even today's game, it was so tight. The margins in Premier League games against them are so fine, but we came out on the right side today. I thought it was a great performance from the players, full of energy, heart and bravery. I'm delighted with how we played."
On how he broke his duck against City, he explains: "The mindset was key and the attitude. The energy was back that was missing against Brentford and West Ham. Our running ability and power was there. Our technical ability was there too, which hasn't always been the case.
"We were brave in our approach. We tried to be aggressive and we got rewarded that at times, they punish you for that at times, so you are always on a bit of a knife-edge against them. Thankfully Nick [Pope] made some good saves when needed them and we got the goals at good times,” he added.
More from Guardiola
20:30 , Chris WilsonHere’s more from Pep Guardiola:
"Newcastle is a top side, top players, top manager so unfortunately tonight we could not make the momentum that we had. It was entertaining game, we both had chances and then there was a momentum shift and ultimately we couldn't win.
"Both keepers were good and after we missed chances. It was an entertaining game with many chances. We were closer in the beginning."
On the second Newcastle goal, he says: "It happened in the Bournemouth game and it happened today again. It is what it is after VAR decided. They know perfectly."
On the frustration of dropping points, he adds: "Always but it is a football game and the opponent is playing and they played good too."
"No questions, everything is fine,” he adds when asked what happened with Sam Barrett at full-time.
Guardiola reacts
20:20 , Chris WilsonHere’s what Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said to Sky Sports:
"Tight game. Chances. Entertaining game. At the end they scored two goals and we scored one. (Our performance) was really good in general. We had chances. In the second half we had more chances but unfortunately today we could not finish.
"It was good. Keep going. I know that the intensity and high pressing is really good and unfortunately we could not, in the second half when we had chances, they won duels. They provoked this kind of game and it was difficult."
On the VAR decisions, he adds: "I didn't see it. I didn't see it.
On Donnarumma's complaints, he says: "You see him complain and that is because something wrong happened. It happened the same at Bournemouth.
On the second half, he explains that “the momentum” was key.
“We had the momentum. We scored quick after they scored and then they scored again from a corner."
When asked what he said to Bruno Guimaraes at full-time, he replies: “I said how good he is (but that conversation) is for private situations. Everything is fine."
Harvey Barnes bags brace as Newcastle beat Manchester City in thriller
20:15 , Chris WilsonHarvey Barnes fired Newcastle to a welcome 2-1 Premier League victory over Manchester City with a quickfire double in a thrilling encounter at St James’ Park.
The former Leicester winger struck after 63 and 70 minutes either side of Ruben Dias’ equaliser to secure a first league success against City for head coach Eddie Howe at the 19th attempt.
It could hardly have been better timed with Howe’s men sitting in 15th place, just a single point above the relegation zone, before kick-off on Tyneside with a tough Champions League trip to Marseille to come on Tuesday evening.

Barnes speaks to Sky
20:03 , Chris WilsonMatchwinner Harvey Barnes is first to speak to Sky, and here’s what he had to say:
“[It’s a] big result for us, one we definitely needed on the back of a few poor results. What a game to be involved. we really came out firing in the second half and it's a massive three points.
"It's football and the quicker you move on from missed chances, you quickly bounce back so it was forget [about it] and move on."
On his sitter, he said: "I agree, it's one I've got to score. When you get in that position it is about getting it on target. In the game it is about finding that composure. You've got that horrible two minute wait to see whether it is offside or not."
On going to the World Cup with Scotland, he adds: "That isn't on my mind at the minute. There's a long way to go until the summer and the club form for us hasn't been there. My only focus was about the game tonight and the next period of games that we have got coming up. I can't say there was any thought i that, it was just get the job done tonight which we did."
Woodgate on Newcastle
19:56 , Chris Wilson“A brilliant result for Newcastle,” says Woodgate on 5 Live.
“A great performance. Out of possession they were top drawer and made it so difficult for City tried to find those little pockets in between the lines.
“Second half I thought they were the better team, kept on catching City on transitions and ended up scoring two fantastic goals by Barnes. What a game of football,” he added.
FULL-TIME! Newcastle 2-1 Man City
19:53 , Chris WilsonThe early pundit reaction has focused on City’s title aspirations, with BBC’s Jonathan Woodgate having this to say on 5 Live:
“Man City found it difficult today. One minute they were dominating and then the next minute they were done on the transition.
“They are an exceptional football team and they will still be there at the end of the season. They will still push whoever is at the top of the table,” he added.

The sei-automated offsides show that Dias’ arm and shoulder were keeping Guimaraes onside for the goal.
Anyway, City are looking to forget that as they hunt another equaliser, though they’re settling for patient probing at the moment.
Newcastle 2-1 Man City

GOAL! There’ll be plenty of checks here but Newcastle are ahead! It looks offside in truth.
The cross comes in towards Woltemade and he heads it back across to Guimaraes, who heads it against the underside of the bar!
Luckily, Barnes is there is to bundle it home, but it looks like Guimaraes was offside in the build-up on the replay.
It’s getting checked, and it’s very close.

A half-chance this time for Haaland as a tame effort ends up with Pope.
Moments later, Foden fires well wide with a speculative effort of his own.
The intensity has understandably dropped of late, and it could be time for subs here.

Another huge save from Donnarumma to claw away a low effort from Woltemade, but the flag goes up anyway.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City

A bit of a lull in activity here as both sides fight for control. It doesn’t appear as though either will get it any time soon though – maybe we’ll need to wait until the first goal goes in.
City on the attack but Schar is there to clear once more before Cherki’s cross is straight to Pope.

HALF-TIME! Newcastle 0-0 Man City
18:28 , Chris WilsonIt’s been a hugely entertaining half for the neutral at St James’ Park, and both managers will be simultaneously irritated and happy with different parts of what they saw from their teams.
There’s been plenty of energy, some real attacking invention and some brilliant chances for both sides, though the finishing and the defending has left something to desire from both at times.
It promises to be an intriguing second half at St James’, and we’ll bring you all the latest updates .

HALF-TIME! Newcastle 0-0 Man City
18:18 , Chris WilsonThe referee blows the whistle and somehow these two teams go into the break level.
It could easily be 3-3 at St James’ and that’s without a penalty that City probably should have had!
Neutrals will be hoping for plenty more in the second half, but it’s all square at the break.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Into the first of two minutes of added time and Nico Gonzalez is brought down for a free-kick midway into the Newcastle half.
Foden tries to slip a clever through ball behind the wall into the path of Haaland but there was slightly too much on it.

It’s a little muted inside St James’ now after those big City chances.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
18:13 , Chris Wilson42 mins
CLOSE! Oh my word, it’s another huge miss!
It’s a great City attack too, with the visitors working it wide before Foden exchanges passes with Cherki and cross comes in to the England man near the penalty spot.
He opens his body up looking to find the corner with the first-time finish, but he fires wide of the far post!
That was another chance that looked destined for the back of the net.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Finally some calm after all those missed chances, though neither side is able to keep the ball for too long at the moment. It’s been a frantic first half at St James’!

Another huge chance, this one for Haaland!
Doku plays a lovely thriough ball into the path of O’Reilly, who cuts it back to the Norwegian. He’s only a few yards out but he smashes his effort straight at Pope!

WHAT A MISS! Newcastle should be ahead.
The hosts come forward and slip a pass through to Murphy on the right wing. He looks up and squares it across goal to Barnes, who simply has to tap in for the finish at the back post with Donnarumma struggling, but the winger fires wide!
Hints of offside but he should be scoring that.

Newcastle 0-0 Man City
18:00 , Chris Wilson30 mins
Newcastle looked to press again just there, winning a corner, but the delivery was poor and the chance went begging.
They do come again soon enough though, with Barnes trying to bend in a cross that is headed away easily.
Neither side is really in control at the moment but it’s the hosts who are in the ascendancy at the moment.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:57 , Chris Wilson26 mins
CLOSE! This is probably the best chance of the game so far.
It’s lovely football from Newcastle too, with Tonali finding Barnes, who cuts in from the wing before slipping the final pass into the path of Woltemade.
The German is clean through but under pressure, and he’s forced to take the shot early, placing it too close to Donnarumma!

Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:55 , Chris Wilson25 mins
Lewis Hall leads a Newcastle attack but it ends with Murphy’s ball in escaping a teammate before Doku wins a cheap foul off Tonali in midfield.
The Belgian hasn’t quite managed to find the joy he did against Liverpool, but there’s time yet.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:52 , Chris Wilson22 mins
Another Var review here but this one is less controversial, with calls for a City penalty waved away after Doku’s shot was blocked fairly in the box.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:51 , Chris Wilson21 mins
The official decision regarding that potential penalty was that there was not enough contact for a penalty, apparently. Phil Foden would certainly disagree.
That’s a huge call, and many would say the wrong one.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:50 , Chris Wilson20 mins
Donnarumma gets away with another one here as he comes out to sweep up the danger but briefly hesitates before City clear.
It’s been an entertaining start at St James’.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City

Better from City there, as Doku escapes a challenge in the Newcastle half before releasing Haaland in the area, though the Norwegian sees his shot blocked by Livramento.
Moments later, City have a shout for a penalty as Schar goes in late on Foden, who has surprisingly fired wide with the goal gaping!
This will be looked at, as Schar came flying in after Foden got his shot away...
But it’s cleared!
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:46 , Chris Wilson15 mins
Nico Gonzalez is lucky to avoid a yellow after bringing down Guimaraes to prevent a promising Newcastle attack.
The hosts clip the free-kick in from inside the centre-circle but Gvardiol eventually heads back to Donnarumma under pressure.
Moments later, Joelinton is the latest player to avoid a yellow as he stops Cherki on the counter.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:43 , Chris Wilson13 mins
CLOSE! Great save from Donnarumma.
A lovely switch of play from the hosts frees Barnes down the left, and he slips a pass to the onrushing Hall before the clipped cross is headed away at the last.
The hosts come again though, with Livramento floating in a superb cross to Woltemade, who heads it low but not far enough into the corner, with Donnarumma clawing it away.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:40 , Chris Wilson10 mins
City knocking it around with plenty of confidence as you’d expect, but they haven’t created a lot when Newcastle are able to sit back and organise.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City

City enjoying plenty of possession in the early stages though Newcastle look happy to let them have it in certain areas.
Haaland wins a corner off Livramento and after a brief break – for the ref to speak to Schar and Dias – Cherki’s ball in is headed behind.
The Frenchman will have another chance to deliver – it’s headed back out to him and he skips past the defender before hitting a shot right at Pope.
Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:34 , Chris Wilson3 mins
CHANCE! What a chance this is for a man in Haaland’s form.
The Norwegian is on the end of a through ball around midway into the Newcastle half and Nick Pope looks like he’s in no-man’s land as he hopes to pressure the City striker, but it works out well as Haaland miscues his attempt to curl it past the Magpies ‘keeper.

Newcastle 0-0 Man City
17:32 , Chris Wilson1 min
CLOSE! Newcastle have a chance within 40 seconds as Donnarumma plays a poor pass to Foden, who’s under pressure from two Newcastle men.
The hosts win it on the edge of the box and it runs to Barnes, who tries to find the far corner but hits a tame effort too close to the City ‘keeper.

Newcastle vs Man City: Head-to-head
17:10 , Will CastleSt James’s Park isn’t a place that City have too many fond memories of, winning just one of their last four visits.
That came in January 2024 when goals from Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Oscar Bobb cancelled out the strikes by Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
Last season’s match in the north east finished all square, when Gordon equalised from the penalty spot after Josko Gvardiol had opened the scoring.
But Pep Guardiola’s side may take encouragement from the fact Newcastle have only beaten them once in the last six years - a 1-0 League Cup win in September 2023.
With Eddie Howe’s side struggling for form, today looks a perfect opportunity for City to pick up an increasingly rare victory on Tyneside.
Newcastle vs Man City prediction: City to keep up the pressure
17:00 , Will CastleMan City have been looking in imperious form in recent weeks, winning 11 of their last 14 in all competitions, to move them to within four points of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League and two behind the leaders Bayern Munich in the Champions League table.
After winning nothing last season, it’s hard to imagine a second season with no silverware for City, who have won 15 trophies since Pep Guardiola arrived at the club in 2016.
Football betting sites are offering 9/4 on City winning their 11th title, and although many pundits think the title is a done deal for Arsenal, City are still way too much of a threat.
It’s hard to see Newcastle getting a win tonight, and the best they can probably hope for is a draw at odds of 14/5.

Pep Guardiola drops verdict on Premier League title race as he eyes ‘important step’ against Newcastle
16:45 , Will CastleManchester City are poised to challenge Arsenal's lead at the top of the Premier League, with a victory at Newcastle potentially narrowing the gap to a single point. However, manager Pep Guardiola remains steadfast in his belief that it is premature to discuss the title race, despite the looming opportunity.
"We are in November, and in November in this league nothing is final," Guardiola stated.
"What happens in February or March, be careful. But the season starts now. The first start is when the transfer window is over in the summer. And now again when the international breaks are over.
"Now until March we see each other every three days. Now the real season starts. It is important to be there and to arrive at the end of the season with a chance to fight. Winning (in Newcastle) would be an important step for us."

Closing in on team news
16:25 , Will CastleJust a few minutes until we learn the confirmed line-ups - here’s a reminder of what we know so far:
Dan Burn will miss out after being sent off against Brentford, while Nick Pope was also forced off in the same game after enduring a concussion. Pope joined Anthony Gordon in being withdrawn from England duty due to injury but Howe has confirmed they are in contention to feature. Tino Livramento could also make a long-awaited comeback to the matchday squad after recovering from a knee ligament injury.
Rodri is expected to miss out for the visitors after a setback in his own return from a lengthy layoff, while Mateo Kovacic is set to undergo surgery on a persistent Achilles injury and will be out for some time.
How Eberechi Eze to Arsenal changed Tottenham’s future forever
16:05 , Miguel DelaneyIn the weeks before Daniel Levy left Tottenham Hotspur in September, a Premier League counterpart noticed something that meant the shock departure wasn’t actually much of a surprise at all. They’d registered how Vivienne Lewis – the daughter of former Spurs owner Joe Lewis, whose shares have since been put in a family trust – was suddenly visible at games, “smiling and laughing”. Such conviviality was all the more conspicuous since many rival executives say they hadn’t actually met her. The feeling was: “It didn’t look good for Daniel.”
Levy isn’t seen at all now, which will make a real change for the north London derby, right up to how former Arsenal CEO Vinai Venkatesham is now at Spurs. The refreshed hierarchy is set to be greeted by the increasingly prominent Josh Kroenke, son of Arsenal owner Stan.
It won’t just be a first meeting of new leadership teams across north London, as both clubs coincidentally made huge changes at the same time. It might also herald a more significant shift in English football.
The billionaires have already taken over. Now it’s the time for the billionaires’ children.

Former club of Man City star release statement after racism allegation
15:50 , Will CastleFrench football club Montpellier has vehemently denied allegations of racism made by Australian international Mary Fowler, who claims a teammate presented her with bananas as a departing gift in 2022.
The club issued a statement on Thursday, expressing its "astonishment" at the accusations detailed in Fowler's memoir, Bloom, and asserting a lack of evidence to substantiate her claims.
"Some of them are particularly serious, and the shortcut that results from them — portraying the club as a racist entity — is unacceptable," Montpellier stated.

Newcastle's triple injury boost for the Man City visit
15:35 , Will CastleEddie Howe is hopeful he will be able to welcome back three key players from injury for Newcastle’s stern test against Manchester City.
Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope are at least in contention after withdrawing from England duty with a hip problem and a concussion respectively, while Tino Livramento could also make a return after eight weeks out.
"Anthony Gordon is very close,” Howe said. “He's worked well during the break and he's touch and go for the game. We'll make a very late decision.
“Nick Pope has trained and there's no problems there."
On Livramento, he added: “He’s very close. He's trained in the international break which is great to see. He's such an important player for us and it's great to have him back training with the group.
“He's done a lot of work. He's been very, very good professionally with how he's dealt with the injury and the work he's done with the physios so I'd say he's in good shape."

The Nick Woltemade problem and Eddie Howe’s challenge to save Newcastle’s struggling season
15:20 , Richard JollyThere are plenty of barometers of the Premier League’s strength. One of the more ridiculous is to say the sixth-best team in Europe are only the 14th finest in England. It can be a quirk of autumnal tables: with trips to Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain to come, Newcastle may not finish sixth in the initial phase of the Champions League, even if an Aston Villa-style surge to the quarter-finals does not seem utterly implausible. Nor, in all probability, will a side who finished fifth in England last season end up quite as low. There are precedents for their initial stumbles: Newcastle were 12th in early December in 2024. They showed a slow start can be no impediment to Champions League qualification.
And yet these are unusually troubled times on Tyneside. Newcastle could cite the fixture list, with six away games in their first 11, with the two home defeats to last season’s top two, each coming cruelly late in injury time after spirited showings. Yet more recent memories are of strangely supine performances at West Ham and Brentford, twice leading and yet losing 3-1. They beat Athletic Bilbao in between and have booked another Carabao Cup quarter-final place but it has nevertheless entered the ranks of the worrying starts.

15:05 , Will CastlePep Guardiola hopes to see Manchester City striker Erling Haaland break Alan Shearer’s record as the fastest man to reach 100 Premier League goals on the former England captain’s old St James’ Park stomping ground this weekend.

“Alan Shearer has been so far the greatest top scorer in this league and whatever happens with Erling in his career here, Alan Shearer will still be top (for) his quality to score goals.”
The Spaniard added: “You don’t have to know mathematics to realise that if he (Haaland) stays a long, long time and continues this average, he will be close to Harry Kane and close to Alan Shearer, that’s for sure. But I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future, to be honest.”
