Trent Alexander-Arnold was lucky to escape a red card in Liverpool’s Premier League trip to Newcastle United after appearing to deliberately handball on the line in order to prevent a goal.
The Liverpool right-back saw the ball strike his outstretched right arm on the line from Salomon Rondon’s fiercely-struck effort, with goalkeeper Allison completely beaten by Matt Ritchie’s mis-hit shot back across goal.
Referee Andre Marriner had what looked to be a clear view of the incident, but before he could make a decision on Alexander-Arnold’s infringement, the ball was already in the net as Atsu fired home the rebound.
Newcastle had already gone behind, having left defender Virgil van Dijk unmarked from an Alexander-Arnold corner after 10 minutes, but having played what little advantage there was, Marriner elected to let Atsu’s goal stand and not take any action against Alexander-Arnold.
Had Marriner through otherwise, the England right-back could have been expected to be punished in the form of a penalty and a straight red card.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is lucky there as 1-1 is the best thing that could happen to Liverpool in this situation,” said Sky Sports co-commentator Jamie Carragher.
“It’s a penalty and a red card.”
Newcastle’s mood did not improve as the half wore on, as Liverpool were soon back in front when Mohamed Salah neatly tucked away a cross from – of all people – Alexander-Arnold with a lovely-struck finish on the turn.
