Civic Station will become a permanent new home for Newcastle's Visitor Information Centre early next year.
City of Newcastle said on Wednesday that it would move the information centre from Newcastle Museum after it took possession of the former station late this year.
Former Tourism Hunter chairman Will Creedon applauded the move, saying it would increase the visitor centre's visibility.
The state government is finishing a $2.3 million remodelling of the station surrounds, known as Museum Place, before handing the building to the council.
The visitor centre has led a nomadic existence in the past three decades, shifting from Queens Wharf to Stations Masters Cottage to Hunter Street to Honeysuckle maritime museum then Newcastle Museum.
The council said the visitor centre attracted 6500 visits a month at the museum.
