Newcastle versus Spurs game suspended after fan suffers medical emergency in stands

Newcastle United's match with Spurs was suspended due to a medical emergency in the stands this afternoon.

The referee Andre Marriner and players were alerted by fans in the East stand who were whistling and shouting to attract their attention around 39 minutes into the match.

In dramatic scenes, Tottenham's Eric Dier then ran over to ask for a defibrillator from the other side of the pitch.

The Premier League clash was suspended for several minutes while medics attended and gave the supporter emergency treatment.

After halting the game with both sides on the sidelines, Marriner consulted Spurs captain Harry Kane and Jamaal Lascelles and it was agreed that the two teams should go off the field and back to the dressing room.

The stadium announcer then confirmed players would return to finish the final seven minutes of the first half after warming up again.

The supporter was applauded as he left the ground on a stretcher by fellow fans.

Newcastle later issued an update to say the fan had been 'stabilised' by medics and taken to hospital.
