Match report: Burnely 1-1 Brighton

Premier League: Lewis Dunk and Johann Gudmundsson got the goals as the points were shared at Turf Moor.

Match report: Newcastle United 3-2 Southampton

Premier League: Louise Taylor was at St James’ Park to see Newcastle hold on for the win with a terrific backs-to-the-wall performance against beleaguered Southampton after being reduced to nine men for much of the second half through a combination of ill disicpline and injury.

Match report: Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

Premier League: Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game in the second minute to give Villa the win over toothless Arsenal. Nick Ames was there ...

Women's Super League: Aston Villa 1-0 Tottenham

A sensational strike from Mana Iwabuchi earned Aston Villa their first home win.

Sean Dyche speaks ...

“First half I thought we were not a million miles away,” he tells the BBC following his side’s draw with Brighton. “Second half I felt we had a bit more belief in what we were doing. First half I felt we were waiting for things to happen but the second half we were making things happen.

“I thought our approach play in the second half was excellent. I talk about framework and freedom. You need a defensive framework but you need freedom as well and I felt we showed that in the second half.

“I thought there were a number of good performances. I thought we were terrific in the second half. I spoke recently in some games we create 20 odd chance and we did today. We are not too greedy and we have come a long way since the first eight games. I was pleased with the mentality and the quality today.”

Ralph Hasenhuttl speaks

“No,” says the Southampton manager in an interview with BT Sport, upon being asked if his team deserved to take anything from their game against Newcastle. “The way we conceded was far too easy and it’s not the way you can defend in the Premier League.

“It’s always tough to come back but we tried, scored twice and created some chances, but when you defend like this it’s hard to get points. We had two men more at the end and we had chances but it’s not so easy because they defended well. The way we conceded goals today was too easy.

“We need to find the reset burtton and go back to the behaviour we have shown at the beginning of the season.”

Full time: Burnley 1-1 Brighton

Premier League: In a less eventful top flight game at Turf Moor, Burnley came back from a goal down to rescue a much needed point against Brighton.

Full time: Newcastle 3-2 Southampton

Premier League: Even disgruntled Newcastle fans will have to concede that was a decent effort from their side, who have held out for 17 minutes with nine men to beat Southampton by the odd goal of five. They rode their luck at times, but take all three points.

League One: Burton lead Hull City 1-0 after Jonny Smith scores with his side’s first shot on target at the Pirelli Stadium.

Scottish Premiership result: Hibernian 2-0 Aberdeen.

Championship: Millwall go 4-1 up against Sheffield Wednesday at the Den in the 90th minute, with Tom Bradshaw putting the game well beyond the Owls. At Kenilworth Road, Huddersfield’s Harry Toffolo has just been sent off with his side drawing 1-1 with Luton Town.

Scottish Premiership: Some rare good news for Celtic fans, whose side have beaten Motherwell 2-1. Elsewhere in Scotland: St Mirren 2-0 Kilmarnock and Ross County 0-2 Dundee United are full time scores.

League One: Portsmouth score two goals in as many minutes to make it 2-2 in their game against Plymouth Argyle. Ronan Curtis pulled one back for Pompey in the 86th minute, before James Bolton made it all square a minute later.

Premier League: Newcastle are currently holding out with nine men, having lost Jeff Hendrick to a red card and Fabian Schar to injury after they’d used all three of their substitutes. Newcastle lead 3-2 with three minutes to go plus the same again and probably more of injury time.

Championship: Ivan Toney scores his second of the afternoon and his sixth in three games to put Brentford 4-1 up against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.

League One: AFC Wimbledon lead Wigan 3-2 at the DW Stadium, while Portsmouth are two down at home to Plymouth Argyle.

Championship: Bournemouth have gone 3-2 up against Birmingham City in a ding-dong battle at the Vitality Stadium, where Philip Billing has put them ahead.

Premier League: Already down to the bare bones in terms of defensive personnel, Newcastle have just lost Fabian Schar to a knee injury. The defender is stretchered off after a clash with Yannick Westergaard. It reamins Newcastle 3-2 Southamnpton with 11 minutes to go.

Championship: Anthony Knocvkaert smashes home to convert a low cross from the left to put Nottingham Forest 3-0 up against Wycombe. At Kenilworth Road, Naby Sarr spanks the ball home to equalise for Huddersfield Town against Luton Town.

Championship: Scott Hogan makes it Bournemouth 2-2 Birmingham, glancing home a header to score his second goal of the afternoon for the Midlands side.

At the Den, Scott Malone fires home to put Millwall 2-1 up against Sheffield Wednesday but his moment in the sun is quickly eclipsed by his teammate Ben Thompson, who extends the home side’s lead with a sensational strike from out wide that cynics might argue was meant to be a cross.

Premier League: Leading by the odd goal of five but down to 10 men, Newcastle are creaking and very much on the back foot. Southampton’s Danny Ings just thumped a shot off the foot of the upright and Che Adams has had a close range effort ruled out for offside. Newcastle substitution: Paul Dummett on for Allan Saint-Maximin.

Championship: Resurrecting his career at Bournemouth, Jack Wilshere has given his side a 2-1 lead against Birmingham City. Managerless after the dismissal of Jason Tindall earlier this week, Bournemouth are being overseen by Jonathan Woodgate.

Meanwhile at the Riverside Stadium, a slip from Paddy McNair gives Mathias Jensen a free run at goal. He rounds the goalkeeper and slots home to give Brentford a 3-1 lead over Boro.

Championship: Vitaly Janelt puts Brentford ahead against Middlesbrough.

League One: Sunderland make it 2-2 against MK Dons, with Luke O’Nien levelling proceedings with a goal in the 56th minute.

Championship: Without a goal to his name since last February going into this game, Glenn Murray has scored his second on debut for Nottingham Forest, winning and scoring a penalty to double their lead against Wycombe Wanderers.

At Loftus Road, Yoann Barbet has given QPR the lead with the only goal of the game against Blackburn Rovers. Meanwhile at Deepdale, Ben Wiles has put Rotherham 2-0 up against Preston.

GOAL! Burnley 1-1 Brighton (Gudmunsson 53)

Premier League: Johann Gudmundsson makes it all square at Turf Moor, stabbing the ball home after some pinball in the Brighton penalty area.

Red card at St James' Park!

Premier League: Newcastle’s Jeff Hendrick gets his second yellow card, followed by a red, for his second bookable offence - a needless tug on the shirt of Takumi Minamino. After the whistle blew for the foul, James Ward-Prowse reminded the referee that Hendrick was already on a booking and should get another one. The match official concurred and Newcastle are down to 10 men.

GOAL! Newcastle 3-2 Southampton (Ward-Prowse 48)

Premier League: WOW! In the pouring rain at St James’ Park, James Ward-Prowse curls home a wonderful free-kick from 30 yards out, sending the ball into the top corner. That is an astonishingly good goal.

Premier League: Jonjo Shelvey has his head in his hands at St James’ Park and it’s small wonder. Having been teed up beautifully by a pull-back from, I think, Allan Saint-Maximin, the Newcastle midfielder completely miscues with the goal at his mercy and skews his shot wide.

Premier League: A chance at Turf Moor, where Brighton lead Burnley by the only goal of the game. With the Burnley defence backing off him, Brighton striker Aaron Connolly advanced before unleashing a low drive from distance that Nick Pope did well to turn around his upright for a corner.

Championship: Brentford equalise against Middlesbrough, with Ivan Toney has slotted the ball home after having it played into his path by Tarique Fosu.

Meanwhile at the Den, Kenneth Zohore has roofed a penalty-kick to restore parity for Millwall against Sheffield Wednesday.

Match report: Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

Premier League: Nick Ames was at Villa Park to see toothless Arsenal go down to an Ollie Watkins goal in the second minute. Here’s how he saw the action unfold.

League Two: Ryan Bowman equalised for Exeter City against Bradford City in the only league game currently being played and his side have just gone ahead by the odd goal of five courtesy of Matt Jay’s penalty on 79 minutes.

Full time: Coventry City 0-0 Watford

Championship: It’s finished scoreless at St Andrew’s, a result that leaves Watford in fourth place and Coventry down in 17th.

Full time: Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal

Premier League: It’s all over at Villa Park, where Arsenal are officially back in crisis following their second defeat in as many games. A very early goal from Ollie Watkins won the points for Villa, who move up to eighth in the table, leaving Arsenal looking up at them from 10th.

League Two: There’s an interesting name in the Crawley Town line-up, with reality TV star Mark Wright making his full debut for the club in their match against Harrogate Town. The subject of a documentary series chronicling his effort to become a professional footballer, the 34-year-old has been the subject of some mockery but is supposed to be a pretty decent footballer.

Newcastle v Southampton: Joe Willock starts for Newcastle, making his debut since signing on loan from Arsenal. Allan Saint-Maximin starts for the first time since being floored by Covid in November, while Ryan Fraser is on the bench and Ciaran Clark is attending to the important business of attending the birth of his child. Good luck to him and his partner.

For Southampton, Takumi Minamino makes his debut up front, while Yannick Westergaard, Oriol Romeu and Nathan Redmond also start. Kayne Ramsay and Moussa Djenepo drop to the bench, while Stuart Armstrong is out injured and Alexandre Jankewitz is suspended after his midweek rush of blood to the head.

Burnley v Brighton: Ashley Barnes returns from injury to take his place in the Burnley line-up, with Jay Rodriguez making way and dropping to the bench.

Having scored the midweek winner against Liverpool between them, Steven Alzate and Leandro Trossard are on the Brighton bench today, while Solly March misses out through injury. Joel Veltman, Aaron Connnolly and Alexis Mac Allister start.

Newcastle v Southampton line-ups

Newcastle: Darlow, Manquillo, Hayden, Schar, Lewis, Willock, Hendrick, Shelvey, Saint-Maximin, Almiron, Wilson

Subs: Dubravka, Dummett, Carroll, Joelinton, Ritchie, Gayle, Krafth, Fraser, Anderson

Southampton: McCarthy, Vestegaard, Bednarek, Stephens, Ward-Prowse, Romeu, Minamino, Bertrand, Redmond, Adams, Ings

Subs: Forster, Djenepo, Salisu, Tella, Ramsay, N’Lundulu, Finnigan, Watts, Chauke

Burnley v Brighton line-ups

Burnley: Pope, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Pieters, Gudmundsson, Westwood, Cork, McNeil, Barnes, Vydra.

Subs: Peacock-Farrell, Stephens, Rodriguez, Bardsley, Long, Dunne, Benson, Driscoll-Glennon, Mumbongo.

Brighton: Sanchez, White, Dunk, Webster, Veltman, Bissouma, Burn, Gross, Mac Allister, Maupay.

Subs: Walton, Karbownik, Trossard, Lallana, Moder, Alzate, Welbeck, Tau, Zeqiri.

League Two: There’s been another goal in the game between Exeter and Bradford, where Oliver Crankshaw has restored the northern side’s lead on the stroke of half-time.

Newcastle v Southampton team news

Permanently in crisis, the occasional surprise win over Everton notwithstanding, Newcastle host a Southampton side likely to be suffering from collective Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following the 9-0 midweek shellacking they suffered at Old Trafford.

Newcastle find themselves with something of a defensive crisis, with Jamaal Lascelles and Federico Fernandez both out injured, while Ciaran Clark may miss out after rushing to be by his partner’s side after she went into labour yesterday. Jamal Lewis is likely to miss out with a hamstring injury, while Paul Dummett is also struggling.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference yesterday, Steve Bruce told reporters that new signing Joe Willock, who came in on loan from Arsenal on Deadline Day, will feature in today’s game. “He’s a little bit different to what we’ve got, said Bruce. “He wants to get forward and score a goal - that’s in his locker - and he’s got the ability to get up and down the pitch. He’s young, enthusiastic and raring to go.”

Having briefly topped the table before Christmas, Southampton’s season is unravelling with alarming speed and they have taken just three Premier League points from the past 24 available. Ralph Hasenhuttl was missing nine members of his senior squad during the week, but may have Oriol Romeu and Yannik Vestergaard available, while Jan Bednarek is also ready for action after having the red card brandished in his direction at Old Trafford overturned. Up front, Takumi Minamino could feature for the first time since joining on loan from Liverpool.

Burnley v Brighton team news ...

Just one place above the relegation zone following consecutive defeats at the hands of Manchester City and Chelsea, Burnley entertain Brighton and must attempt to stop their ascent up the table following recent wins against Liverpool and Tottenham.

First choice strikers Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood were both absent for Burnley’s midweek game against City, while Robbie Brady, Josh Brownhill and Charlie Taylor were also sidelined with injury. While Sean Dyche does not expect any of the quintet to be sidelined for too long, this game could come too quickly for some or all of them.

Brighton also have injury problems, with Solly March set to miss out after hobbling off against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday night. He joins Tariq Lamptey, Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Florin Andone and Danny Welbeck on the list of the squad’s lame and halt. In better news for Seagulls fans, manager Graham Potter may welcome Joel Veltman and Alexis Mac Allister back from the physio room.
