Peep! Peep! Peep! It’s all over, Newcastle hang on to win 3-2, courtesy of goals from Papiss Cisse, Ayoze Perez and Jack Colback in response to Arouna Kone’s opener. Kevin Mirallas pulled a goal back for Everton with 10 minutes remaining, but Newcastle were able to hang on and should conceivably have extended their lead in the frantic final few seconds.
90+3 min: With Newcastle attacking on the counter, Cabella selfishly tries his luck when he should have passed to the unmarked Riviere to score into an empty net. Moments later, Rivier goes close again, then Perez rattles the foot of the upright with a diagonal shot from distance.
90+1 min: Cheick Tiote takes a shot when he should have held possession, incurring his manager’s wrath and allowing to break on a counter-attack. Jak Alwnick is forced to smother Seamus Coleman’s cross into the Newcastle penalty area.
90 min: Newcastle substitution: Yoan Gouffran walks off very, very slowly and is replaced by Remy Cabella. There’ll be four minutes of added time.
88 min: Everton win a free-kick in a promising position on the left. Mirallas whips it wide of the upright, but it was a good effort.
84 min: That was an opportunistic goal from Everton. Mike Williamson got caught iin possession high up the pitch and the ball was played through the centre towards the Newcastle penalty area from midfield. Coloccini was the only man back and couldn’t get to it, which Mirallas pounced on before deftly chipping Alwnick, who’d charged out of his goal to avert the danger.

81 min: “UP IN THE SKY JAK, JUST KEEP IT ON THE PITCH!” shouts Alan Pardew at his goalkeeper, as he prepares to take a goal-kick. It’s a fairly simple instruction and speaks lots about Pardew’s sophisticated tactical philosophy, but unfortunately his goalkeeper fails to comply. His effort bounces out for a throw-in, prompting a shake of the head from the man in the technical area.

80 min: Garbutt sends the ball into the mixer, where Jak Alwnick comes for it but fails to get a hand to it. It bounces wide and his bacon is saved.
79 min: Everton continue to huff and puff, but Newcastle’s house stands firm. They’re playing very well, but not up against much. Everton win a corner.
77 min: Ayoze Perez curls a wonderful cross through the corridor of uncertainty between Joel Robles and his defence, but there’s nobody on hand in a Newcastle shirt to steer it home.
75 min: It’s looking increasingly grim here for Everton, who are two goals behind and apparently out of ideas. Gareth Barry lumps the ball in the general direction of Romelu Lukaku, but there’s too much welly on his pass and it bounces harmlessly out for a goal-kick.
72 min: Some substitutions: Arouna Kone off and Romelu Lukaku on for Everton. Papiss Cisse off and Emmanuel Riviere on for Newcastle.
70 min: Alcaraz gets booked for scything down Moussa Sissoko as the Newcastle man bore down on goal. As the ball broke to Cisse, the referee played the advantage, prompting the Newcastle striker to test Joel Robles.
68 min: Ross Barkley makes a complete dog’s breakfast of what I think was an attempt to shepherd a cross towards the feet of his own goalkeeper. Running in behind him, Jack Colback is presented with a gift-wrapped late Christmas present and slots the ball past Robles.

65 min: Papiss Cisse must have some sort of dirt on referee Craig Pawson. He cleans out Leighton Baines with a scissors challenge from the side and doesn’t even concede a free-kick, let alone concede a free-kick. That’s one red card and one yellow he’s dodged in this match so far. [Note from the Guardian lawyers: we don’t really think Cisse has some sort of dirt on referee Craig Pawson.]
63 min: Leighton Baines does well to beat Tiote and drill a low cross into the penalty area for Samuel Eto’o. From a promising position in the Newcastle penalty area, he sends the ball screaming over the cross-bar.
59 min: For the moment at least, Newcastle have taken complete control of this match and are really taking it to Everton. Roberto Martinez makes a change, bringing on Kevin Mirallas in place of Aiden McGeady. Mirallas takes up position on the left, with Samuel Eto’o moving to the right, where he can’t conceivably be any less effective.

56 min: Newcastle’s fans have found their voice again and are really getting behind their team, buoyed as they are by coming from a goal down to take the lead, and the news that Alan Pardew is favourite to get the vacant manager’s job at Crystal Palace.
53 min: Newcastle turn the screw, ratcheting up the pressure on Everton. They force another corner, but nothing comes of it because Colback’s delivery is atrocious and fails to beat the first man. That goal came after good work from Cheick Tiote, who picked out Perez with a good pass and the Spaniard shimmied this way and that before firing towards the bottom left-hand corner.

50 min: Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles saves brilliantly from Papiss Cisse, who’d done well to get in front of Alvaro Alcaraz and poke a shot goalwards after getting on the end of a brilliant Sissoko cross.
49 min: Daryl Janmatt heads the ball out for an Everton corner after Kone and then Coleman had sent crosses into the Newcastle penalty area. Leighton Baines sends the ball into the penalty area and Jak Alnwick dithers over wheher or not to come for it. The young goalkeeper’s eventually bailed out by his defenders.
46 min: If the earlier match between Spurs and Manchester United earlier is anything to go by, we can expect an error-strewn and uninspiring second half from some very tired players as the understandably exhausting consequences of playing two matches in little over 48 hours catches up with them. That said, neither of these teams seemed to have expended much energy on Boxing Day, so they might be fine.

Everton have made one change, bringing on Ross Barkley in place of James McCarthy.
Half-time babble: A replay shows that referee Craig Pawson seemed to have a clear view of Papiss Cisse’s elbow into the face of Seamus Coleman, but still chose to do nothing, which seems remarkable. He was watching the pair tussle and can’t possibly have missed Cisse felling the Donegal man in what was as obvious a red card offence as you’re ever likely to see. Strange.
Half-time: Newcastle 1-1 Everton
It’s honours even at St James’ Park, where the teams troop off for their half-time cuppa with one goal apiece. Arouna Kone opened the scoring with a goal for Everton early doors, but Papiss Cisse levelled proceedings with a well taken goal. It came moments after he’d elbowed Seamus Coleman in the face, only to escape the red card he’d surely have been shown if referee Craig Pawson had seen his naughtiness.

45+1 min: Paul Dummett heads the ball into the path of Daryl Janmatt, who’d ghosted into the Everton penalty area. The Newcastle right-back looked to have a clear shot on goal from close range, only for Sylvain Distin to avert the danger with a last-ditch lunge.
44 min: The game seems to have fizzled out a bit, but Alcaraz livens up proceedings by clattering into the back of Cisse when no such aggression looked at all necessary. The Newcastle player wins a free-kick.

39 min: Everton win a free-kick deep in Newcastle territory, wide on the right for a Coloccini foul on James McCarthy. Garbutt stands over the ball, then whips it into the Newcastle penalty area, where Coloccini clears.
38 min: Garbutt and Barry combine to try to set up Kone, but the final pass is too leaden-footed and gets away from the Everton striker.
35 min: From the left flank, Cheick Tiote crossed the ball to the far post, where Mike Williamson did well to hook it diagonally back across the penalty area. It wasn’t at an ideal height for Cisse, who did well to keep his body over the bouncing ball and steer it into the gaping goal. Good finish, but Everton will be raging that the goalscorer was still on the pitch.

Having been very, very lucky to avoid a red card just moments ago, Papiss Cisse restores parity for Newcastle.
30 min: While being held at that corner, Papiss Cisse swung an elbow and floored - I think - Seamus Coleman, who drops to the ground. Luckily for Cisse, the referee didn’t see what he did or he’d have surely walked. Unluckily for Cisse, because the referee didn’t see it, he’s now eligible for a retrospective three-match ban.
30 min: Newcastle win a corner, which Perez fails to get past the first defender. The standard of corner-taking in the Premier League is truly atrocious. It’s really not that difficult to take a corner properly. Even I can do it ... sometimes.
28 min: Yellow cards for Yoan Gouffran and James McCarthy. The former gets booked for an innocuous looking aerial challenge on Seamus Coleman, while McCarthy gets his name taken for clattering into Sissoko.
26 min: There’s a break in play as Cheick Tiote ships a blow to the swingers from the football. Oof!
25 min: Everton have taken control of the game in recent minutes and Coloccini is forced to hack clear after Arouna Kone had taken the ball down with his back to goal just inside the Newcastle penalty area, where he was unable to turn.
23 min: Garbutt wins possession in midfield and surges forward, only to have Eto’o take control of the ball and pick out Seamus Coleman with a pass through the centre. He curls a shot not too far wide of the left upright. His effort wouldn’t have stood had it been more accurate, the linesman flagged him for offside ... eventually.

21 min: Jack Colback slides in to floor Gareth Barry with a crunching challenge. Moments previously, Cheick Tiote had felled Leighton Baines with a hefty tackle while contesting a 50-50 ball. Both Everton players appear to be OK.
20 min: Newcastle are dominating possession and get a cross in towards Everton’s near post from the right. Sylvain Distin stretches to half-clear the ball and Luke Garbutt finishes the job by hacking clear.
17 min: Newcastle fans embark on a minute’s applause for their fallen comrades John Adler and Liam Sweeney, who were on board Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 that was shot down over Ukraine earlier this year, while on their way to watch their team in a pre-season tour in New Zealand. Newcastle win a corner, which is taken by Ayoze Perez, but Everton clear.
16 min: Everton win a free-kick just inside their own half, wide on the left. The ball’s hoofed towards Newcastle’s penalty area, where Moussa Cissoko wins it and embarks on a counter-attack. He goes around Gareth Barry and sends the ball towards Tiote, who tries an opportunistic shot from distance, that isn’t too far off. Had his audacious effort from distance gone in, it wouldn’t have counted as the linesman had flagged for an offside.
14 min: That early Everton goal seems to have sucked the life out of Newcastle’s home support, so the atmosphere seems strangely flat at the moment.
12 min: Papiss Cisse does well to beat Anton Alcaraz in the air and head the ball into the path of Moussa Cissoko, who was on the charge through the centre. In behind the Everton defence with the goal at his mercy, his atrocious first touch gives Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles the advantage and he uses it to put the ball out for a corner, from which nothing comes.
10 min: Free-kick for Newcastle, about 40 yards from the Everton goal, left of centre. Colback sends the ball into the penalty area, where Distin clears. Daryl Janmatt puts the ball out of play to prevent Everton attacking on the break.

8 min: Samuel Eto’o tries his luck from distance after the ball had broken his way by way of a ricochet off Coloccini. His drive from about 30 yards swerves harmlessly wide of the Newcastle goal.
6 min: That’s a fine start for Everton, who have silenced the Newcastle crowd within five minutes of the first whistle. Yoasn Gouffran was caught out of position as the ball was played wide to Coleman by Aiden McGeady. Coleman had galloped up the right touchline. He sent in a low cross, which the unmarked Kone converted with relative ease, shooting past Jak Alwnick in the Newcastle goal. THat’s Kone’s first goal for Everton.

Everton are ravaged by injuries and suspensions, with Roberto Martinez having been forced to make seven changes from the team that lost on Boxing Day. Luke Garbutt makes his first Premier League start and will play at left-back, allowing Leighton Baines to move up to the left side of Everton’s five-man midfield.
Pre-match niceties: The teams emerge from their dressing rooms and line up in the narrow tunnel. Fabricio Coloccini leads out the home side, while Gareth Barry skippers the visitors. Out they march, led by referee Craig Pawson, who plucks the match ball from the ceremonial plinth.
Managerial news: Having been a 30-1 shot with the bookies yesterday, Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is now the 7-4 favourite to replace Neil Warnock as the new manager of Crystal Palace. Newcastle fans would certainly like to see the back of a man they consider to be little more than a stooge for the club’s chairman Mike Ashley, although it’s difficult to imagine what Crystal Palace fans would make of the appointment of a man who made 128 appearances for their team over four years as a player.
Meanwhile at Everton, Roberto Martinez is reported to be under increasing amounts of pressure following his side’s poor start to the season. One newspaper has today linked Derby County manager Steve McClaren with the Spaniard’s job.

Newcastle followed up their fourth consecutive defeat at the hands of Sunderland with a fairly abject Boxing Day display at Old Trafford, while Everton have also lost two on the spin and notched up just one win in their last seven games in all competitions, losing five of them. Newcastle manager Alan Pardew’s lack of popularity on Tyneside is well documented, while grumbling about his Everton counterpart Roberto Martinez’s suitability for the job at Goodison Park have become more audible in recent weeks. Both men could do with a win today, while defeat for either would really ratchet up the pressure. Kick-off is at 4.15pm.
