Newcastle unlikely to turn to men who missed out on Premier League squad numbers for League Cup campaign - despite eligibility

Steve Bruce is unlikely to turn to any of the players who didn't make it into his Premier League squad when he takes on Leicester in the League Cup.

The likes of Jack Colback, Achraf Lazaar, Rolando Aarons, Henri Saivet and Jamie Sterry are eligible to play in the EFL Cup but Bruce is set to stick with his Premier League roster as the club look to find loan deals or permanent deals for those without a top-flight squad number.

Instead, Bruce will look to former Argentina international Federico Fernandez, Japan striker Yoshinori Muto, Jonjo Shelvey and Ki as he aims to field a strong side.

Javier Manquillo, Jetro Willems and Matty Longstaff also come into contention.

Bruce said: "We've got enough experienced players to pick a team that, hopefully, will get us through to the next round."

Bruce is set to run late checks on skipper Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar, with both picking up knocks at Spurs.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers has underlined his aims in the EFL Cup this season.

He said: "We would like to have a good run in the cup competitions.

"That’s what we’ve all agreed.

"We’ve spoken on that.

"We’ll always put a team out that we think can get a result.

"Players have a chance every day to prove to be in the team, so we’ll pick a side that can win the game."
