Newcastle University offers cost of living support to struggling students

Students who are struggling at Newcastle University have been told they have access help and support.

Many students have faced tough times recently with rising costs across the board hitting those with the least financial support.

Some students have spoken about how the rising pressures of juggling their important studies with the need to work has left many reconsidering their options, with some even dropping out of their course to find full-time work. The BBC recently shared the story of student nurses who could no longer afford to maintain their studies alongside work placements and part-time work.

For Newcastle University students, at least, there is support available out there. The university and students’ union have a number of initiatives and schemes in place to help those who are experiencing difficulties.

Emergency support fund

Any student who finds themselves struggling to make ends meet and are unable to cover essential day-to-day living costs will be able to access funding from the university. It can offer short-term emergency assistance, can carry out an assessment to see if students could be entitled to extra money and can offer independent advice.

Student pantry

The Students’ Union has opened a pantry that can help with accessible, stigma-free support for students under financial pressure. Organisers aim to maintain stock levels to ensure that there’s plenty of items available, including:

  • Pasta and rice (in a refillable container)

  • Tins of vegetables, pulses, soups, tuna etc

  • Chocolate bars and cereals

  • Laundry powder (in refillable container)

On-campus jobs

Jobs on campus are just what the title suggests, part-time work is available across the campus in different roles including administration, customer service, library assistance and event support. Roles are usually flexible, with the understanding that studies come first.

Other universities may have similar help available. If you are experiencing hardship, reach out to your university's welfare team to see what they have on offer. Alternatively, you can always contact Citizens Advice for free and impartial advice.
