Newcastle United youngster Kell Watts joins Wigan Athletic on season-long loan

Newcastle United youngster Kelland Watts has joined League One side Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan.

The 21-year-old has been in and around the Magpies First Team during pre-season with his most recent appearance coming in last weekend's 3-0 win over Norwich City.

The defender has joined Leam Richardson's for the remainder of the campaign and will wear the number two shirt for the Latics.

Watts is no stranger to League One having spent last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle.

The youngster made 50 appearances for the Pilgrims and scored three times during his tenure at Home Park.

Watts told the Latics website : “I’ve met the lads and the gaffer and I’m really happy to be here. They’ve welcomed me in well which has been brilliant.

“I think what excited me when I knew Wigan were interested was the players that have come through the door and the management team as well. I thought it was a special group here and something I want to be a part of - winning games and keeping clean sheets.

“Pre-season with Newcastle has been good; I’ve played a full game and a couple of 45-minute run outs too. Physically I’m in good shape and I’m ready to go.”

He could be in line to feature for the Latics this evening in their Carabao Cup clash with Hull City, but failing that, is likely to be involved for Richardson's side at the weekend as they welcome Rotherham United to the DW Stadium.
