Newcastle United youngster follows in Kevin Mbabu's footsteps after Magpies release

Former Newcastle United forward Yannick Toure has followed in the footsteps of another former Magpies following his release from St James' Park.

The 20-year-old striker has linked up with Swiss side Young Boys ahead of the new season - following in the footsteps of a certain Kevin Mbabu.

Toure is no stranger to the Swiss Super League outfit having started his career in Bern as a youngster.

The Magpies paid a substantial compensation fee for his services in order to pry him away from the Wankdorf Stadium back in 2018, with big things expected of the then 17-year-old.

The striker was released by Newcastle in the summer after three years on Tyneside - meaning they aren't entitled to any compensation for him.

Young Boys won the league by a remarkable 31 points last year, losing just two games all season.

A Newcastle United statement read: "Swiss forward Yannick Touré has rejoined former club Young Boys following his release from Newcastle United.

"The 20-year-old was with the Bern-based outfit's academy between 2011 and 2018, when he joined the Magpies as a 17-year-old.

"And he has now signed a three-year deal with David Wagner's side, who are the current Swiss Super League champions, after leaving United in June.

"Touré didn't make a first team appearance during his time on Tyneside, although he did play a handful of games in the EFL Trophy.

"He was one of several youngsters to depart St. James' Park this summer. One of them, Lugwig Francillette, has since joined Crawley Town while another, Owen Bailey, has signed for Gateshead."
