Newcastle United would be the wrong move for Rangers manager Steven Gerrard - Sam Allardyce

Former Newcastle United boss Sam Allardyce insists there would be no reason why current Rangers boss Steven Gerrard would be interested in the current vacant managerial position at St James' Park.

Allardyce, who managed the Magpies between 2007 and 2008 believes the 41-year-old is content in his job with the current Scottish champions, despite Gerrard being linked with the job in recent weeks.

Unai Emery was another potential target for the newly rich club, but has turned down supposed advances claiming he is completely focussed on his role at Villareal.

Gerrard, who is now fast approaching 200 games as the Gers' boss, led the team to their first league title in 10 years and ended the 21/22 league campaign undefeated with a staggering record of 102 points.

Allardyce however, believes the move would make no sense considering Newcastle's current challenges at the bottom of end of the Premier League table.

Speaking on TalkSport, Allardyce began: '"I don't think Steven at this stage would leave Rangers where they are, top of the league, winning every week, to fight at the bottom of the Premier League.

"The Premier League's a massive exciting league that everybody wants to manage in across the world, so I presume he would want to get here some day but at the moment Newcastle, massive job that it is, but... why leave Rangers who are winning every week to challenge yourself with the trials and tribulations of Newcastle United?

"Even though they have got plenty of money to spend, but they can't spend it that quick because of financial fair play, I don't think."
