Newcastle United would-be owners hoping to learn takeover outcome after Premier League confirm Project Restart

Newcastle United's would-be buyers are hoping that the resolution of Project Restart will clear the path for the Premier League to conclude their ongoing owner's and director's test.

The Premier League announced yesterday that the competition will restart on June 17 with Newcastle set to take on Sheffield United on the weekend of 19-21 June.

A series of long-winded video conferences and paperwork has not helped the takeover process for Amanda Staveley, the Reuben brothers and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

However, the Prem's resumption, after two months of no football due to the virus pandemic, has slowed down the process of the £300million deal.

Throughout that time the Premier League have not commented on the takeover but chief executive Richard Masters did at least acknowledge it last weekend.

He told BBC then: "I can’t say anything about it. It’s an entirely confidential process and I can’t say anything to prejudice that process.

"Our owners and directors test is what it is, it’s there for everyone to see. We will be talking about this on a confidential basis when we get to these issues."

United's current staff have not been guided by Mike Ashley on the prospect of new owners but brief plans to finish the season are believed to have been sanctioned by the Sports Direct magnate in recent days, although, major spending, such as extending contracts of senior players, has been delayed.

Newcastle players are again focusing on football and had their first training session as a group since March yesterday.

Toon players are now facing an intense schedule of six weekends of action and three midweek rounds of games with the campaign ending on July 25.
