Newcastle United willing to play on despite calls for season to be scrapped, but only when it's safe

Newcastle United are understood to be in favour of completing the season - despite renewed suggestions for the campaign to be declared null and void.

Although, the Magpies are fully respectful of government guidelines and are waiting for the official green light from Premier League chiefs.

With non-league divisions scrapped this way, the argument for all leagues on the football circuit to be cancelled is now in full swing.

Such as decision would deny Liverpool their first league title since 1990 and prevent Sheffield United going into Europe if they were able to keep up their outstanding form.

West Ham's Karen Brady was the first to go public and call for the season to be scrapped but other clubs are understood to feel the same way.

However, Manchester United released their own statement this afternoon reading: "The club fully supports the collective intent to complete the Premier League, FA Cup and the UEFA club competitions."

Some clubs would like to keep the season paused and resume the campaign in June or July, with a later start for the 2020/21 campaign to follow in either September or October.

Steve Bruce, speaking to the Daily Telegraph, said yesterday: “We have to try and get this season finished, whatever that takes, everybody wants that – but we must also remember that the health and safety of players and staff is far more important than football.

“We should not return to training until it is absolutely safe to do so."
