Newcastle United will tread carefully over Dwight Gayle's fitness

Steve Bruce has revealed he must be patient with fit-again Dwight Gayle.

The striker has broken down three times with injuries during Bruce's stint as boss but has played in the last three matches as sub, scoring the winner against West Bromwich Albion to add to his four-goal tally from last season.

It remains to be seen whether Gayle will be involved tonight at Brentford with Bruce speaking about caution ahead of the tie.

Bruce added: "I have to make sure he is right. He got injured back in July and we are just making sure he is right.

"He's had a good week in terms of coming on.

"He is in our thoughts, of course, he is.

"Dwight did really well towards the end of last year.

"He is now trying to show he is right physical wise, so he's had a good week in that respect."

Gayle suffered a hamstring injury at Brentford's old ground Griffin Park in 2017 and was ruled out for several months.
