Newcastle United will return to using just three substitutes and seven players on bench next season

Newcastle United and Premier League clubs have voted against the adoption of the five substitutes rule for the 2020/21 season.

The vote took place at today’s Annual General Meeting and came after clubs moved to change the rules to allow five substitutions, rather than three, in each match to the end of the season back in June.

Football's international law-makers gave competitions the option of increasing substitutes to protect player welfare on the sport's resumption.

But now clubs have chosen to return the original ruling with it being widely reported that 11 of the 20 clubs in the top-flight were against the proposal.

While it is also understood that there was a 10-10 tie in the vote to increase matchday squads to 20 and therefore they will go back to 18, as they were before Project Restart.

All three promoted clubs from the Championship are believed to have voted to return to three substitutes and a bench of seven players rather than the nine implemented for Project Restart.
