Newcastle United will make late call over key midfielder for Manchester City clash

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce will run the rule over Jonjo Shelvey today ahead of the FA Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City.

Shelvey has emerged as a slight doubt after suffering with a niggle following the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Bruce already had problems in midfield with Isaac Hayden and Matt Ritchie picking up soft tissue injuries on Wednesday night at St James' Park.

However, both Sean and Matty Longstaff are back in training and in contention for the FA Cup clash on Tyneside.

The duo have not played since the restart with strains but Bruce is keen to get them back up and running.

With Nabil Bentaleb suspended for picking up two bookings in the FA Cup at Oxford and West Bromwich Albion, United are hoping for a positive final build-up to the clash with Pep Guardiola's side.

Guardiola has Fernandinho banned while Phil Foden, Joao Cancelo, John Stones, Claudio Bravo and Eric Garcia are also doubts.

Sergio Aguero is out of the game after undergoing surgery on his knee.
