Newcastle United will back Steve Bruce in January with funds available

Steve Bruce will get the chance - and the backing to strengthen - his Toon squad again in the January window.

Bruce admitted that he kept his "powder dry" in the last winter trading period in order to bring in the likes of Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis - who cost £35million in total.

However, despite the lack of match day revenue, we understand that Newcastle have the funds to recruit once again in January should the need arise.

Bruce's chief scout Steve Nickson has already been overseas to prepare a long list of candidates for the next two windows.

Bruce told the Chronicle: "All they know is that I want what is best for the club. We didn't sign it in January - because I wanted to keep it for the summer so it helped. A manager always wants a new player in.

"But I think not spending in January certainly helped the situation. We managed to do three loans in January and it helped us.

"But I wanted to keep the powder dry for the summer."

United would have been sitting on an even bigger kitty had it not been for a global pandemic.

But Bruce said: "I can go along with that because of Covid-19. Let's be fair the club have got a hole (financially) but every club has.

"It's a big huge hole. But to get the business done early then I have to say a big thank you to Lee Charnley who I work with daily and the owner who sanctioned it."

With Wilson already hitting the ground running with four goals, Lewis, Hendrick and Ryan Fraser showing glimpses of what they can do and keeper Mark Gillespie one of the key men in the League Cup, United's summer window of work is paying dividends.

Bruce said: "It's great. These players came here because of the unique support as a club.

"We know there is always a storm here in Newcastle.

"But the fact we signed who we did brought it back to me that all of them wanted to play here.

"Yes we had to flex our muscle and fair play we managed to do that. It was hard, believe me."

Bruce also feels that the window has proved that Newcastle are still a big attraction for top players.

Bruce said: "Jamal Lewis is young but all of outfield summer signings have Premier League experience.

"It takes away the risk of learning the language or hit the ground running. Let's not underestimate the power of the club.

"We beat off genuine competition to sign them. And Callum Wilson, Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser all wanted to play for Newcastle despite the competition.

"So we are unique as people look around the club and think: 'Wow".

"I'd like to thank my employers as they flexed their muscles and we weren't going to be beaten which is great."
