Newcastle United waiting for Premier League coronavirus decision

Newcastle United are poised to hear from the Premier League to see whether the Magpies' home game with Sheffield United will be played behind closed doors due to the potential spread of the coronavirus.

Premier League fans could be locked out of top-flight bosses decide to follow the example of Serie A who have already started playing in front of empty terraces and stands.

Minister for Sport Vincenzo Spadafora in Italy also called for Serie A to be suspended.

There were chaotic scenes in Italy on Sunday as Parma and SPAL players lined up to play their game but were told to return to the dressing room as a decision was awaited from the authorities, but the game eventually got under way.

Steve Bruce said: "In all seriousness, we know there is a big meeting on Monday.

"All of us are obviously concerned.

"When you hear the threat of what is happening in Italy and playing behind closed doors, you have to think of people's health.

"We will all be guided."

Newcastle doctor Paul Catterson led the way for Premier League clubs when banning handshakes between players and staff at the training ground.

Bruce said: "It is a natural thing for all of us (handshakes).

Fans will be deeply disappointed if they are locked out at St James' Park.

But all Premier League clubs would have no option to follow the demands of those at the top.
