Newcastle United wait on Premier League guidance over behind-closed-doors fixtures

Newcastle United are still awaiting official guidance from both the government and the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s fixture list.

Despite counterparts in Spain, Italy and Germany releasing clear guidance on procedures for fans, the Premier League are yet to go public with any potential plans to play behind closed doors or postpone matches, despite fixtures set to take place in 48 hours time.

Champions League games in France and Germany took place in front of no fans this week but Liverpool’s exit to Atlético Madrid went ahead as normal.

National reports in the Times suggested games would result in fans being locked out but despite being approached on Monday by the Chronicle, Premier League chiefs have been slow to address whether Newcastle vs Sheff United will be behind closed doors.

Influential former England skipper Gary Lineker posted his fears on social media last night and said: “The NBA has suspended the season. Football is heading that way too.

“Can’t see how it won’t happen.”
