Newcastle United vs West Ham United: Jamaal Lascelles benched as Bruce's top trio start

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce left out his captain Jamaal Lascelles in the season's opener against West Ham.

Bruce handed the responsibility of captaincy over to Federico Fernandez while Ciaran Clark also got the nod from the start and Switzerland international Fabian Schar was not deemed fit enough to start.

The Toon boss went with Allan Saint-Maximin and Jonjo Shelvey in his starting line-up as well as Miguel Almiron, despite all three players not completing a full pre-season.

It meant that Sean Longstaff and Ryan Fraser had to be content with substitute roles and Joelinton also missed out.

United's new £25million signing Joe Willock was ineligible to play against the Hammers as he was not registered in time by the club due to last week's lengthy negotiations over personal terms, but United paraded him on the pitch before the kick off to parade their only summer arrival so far.

Today's line-up

Newcastle United: Woodman; Murphy, Krafth, Fernandez, Clark, Ritchie; Shelvey, Hayden, Almiron; Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Subs: Gillespie, Schar, Lascelles, Lewis, Hendrick, S Longstaff, Fraser, Joelinton, Gayle
