Newcastle United vs Watford team news: Debuts for Wood and Trippier and shock recall for defender

Newcastle United handed Premier League debuts to Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood against Watford.

The duo strengthened Eddie Howe's starting line-up significantly but there was also a return to defensive rearguard for Jamaal Lascelles and Paul Dummett with the former Wales international starting for the first time this season.

Dummett had not started a game since pre-season when he picked up a calf injury against Rotherham.

The Geordie defender replaced Matt Ritchie at the back while Joe Willock was benched after the 1-0 defeat against Cambridge United in the FA Cup.

Wood started in attack alongside Allan Saint-Maximin as Newcastle looked to win their first game since the Burnley game in early December.

Howe had warned his players that they needed to step it after their awful display against the League One side.

The Magpies went into the game knowing that victory would lift them out of the relegation zone for the first time since August.

UNITED: Dubravka, Trippier, Schar, Lascelles, Dummett, Fraser, Shelvey, S Longstaff, Joelinton, Saint-Maximin, Wood

Subs: Darlow, Gillespie, Ritchie, Lewis, Krafth, Murphy, Almiron, Willock, Anderson
