Newcastle United vs Southampton team news: Sean Longstaff handed a start in absence of Isaac Hayden

Steve Bruce has to take on Southampton without Isaac Hayden at St James' Park.

Having made nine changes to the side that lost 2-0 against Aston Villa last weekend for the Burnley League Cup exit, Bruce named 10 of the 11 that were beaten in the second city last weekend.

Hayden's absence meant that Sean Longstaff kept his place after a positive performance against the Clarets in midweek.

And Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin were back in from the start - despite disappointing displays at Villa.

Bruce kept faith with Freddie Woodman with both Karl Darlow and Martin Dubravka sidelined through illness and injury.

Federico Fernandez was back in the three-man defensive unit with Jacob Murphy and Matt Ritchie named as wing-backs.

For the visitors, Adam Armstrong returned to his boyhood club to lead the line for the Saints on a warm day on Gallowgate.

England international James Ward-Prowse skippered Southampton on their long journey north.

UNITED: Woodman, Murphy, Schar, Lascelles, Fernandez, Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, Willock, Almiron, Saint-Maximin, Wilson

Subs: Gillespie, Clark, Joelinton, Lewis, Hendrick, Krafth, Manquillo, Fraser, Gayle.
