Newcastle United vs Leicester City: Lee Ryder's League Cup preview ahead of clash at St James' Park

It's League Cup time again on Tyneside but any excitement in recent years has been fleeting to say the least for Newcastle United.

After being paired with Nottingham Forest in 2017 and 2018, both games looked like decent opportunities to get through, but Newcastle stumbled at the first hurdle.

United did make it through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup in 2016 but were knocked out on penalties.

Leicester City's Jamie Vardy (PA)

Lee Ryder's prediction

Both managers will tweak their sides but it still won't be easy against Leicester - the hardest opponents Newcastle could have asked for at this stage.

But the Magpies at least have home advantage and there are a clutch of players with a point to prove.

Jonjo Shelvey, Yoshinori Muto, Ki and Federicio Fernandez all come back into contention for tie against the Foxes.

I think this one could be a tight affair but I think Newcastle will edge it and progress into the next round.

Referee

Tim Robinson (Middleton-on Sea)

Robinson took charge of some of United's games in the Championship, notably sending of Vurnon Anita against Wolves in a 2-0 defeat.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United, Joelinton scores for Newcastle (Newcastle Chronicle)

Charity bet

We're off and running for the season with the prediction that Joelinton would be an anytime scorer against Spurs at 10/3.

Let's see if Newcastle can now get through after 90 minutes at 23/10.
