Follow live coverage as Newcastle United face Everton today in the Premier League. Another top-flight season will be covered in full right here with The Independent, as reigning champions Manchester City look to make it an unprecedented five titles in a row come the end of 2024/25.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be chasing Pep Guardiola's side, but just as fascinating will be the race for Champions League places, with more teams than ever before having designs on top-four finishes. Chelsea remain big-spending, Manchester United's latest rebuild continues and both Tottenham and Newcastle will expect improvements this year - yet it was Aston Villa who snared fourth last term.

Meanwhile, it's Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich Town who made it back to the elite after promotion last year and each will have hope they can make it more than a one-year stay. Follow the latest live action from the Premier League below:

Newcastle United vs Everton

18:13

Despite losing 1-0 at home to Everton on the Premier League's final day, assistance from elsewhere means fifth-placed Newcastle have snuck into the last Champions League place. It was admittedly a frustrating day at St James' Park, as Pickford stood strong in the first half to deny Tonali and Isak with a double save. He continued his personal highlight reel with a fine pair of stops against Botman, before Pope made his first real save just before the interval from Alcaraz. Following that attempt and the break, Everton's only goal of the afternoon came as a real surprise. With a header that eventually helped the Toffees exceed their 0.90 xG, Alcaraz directed a brilliant Mykolenko cross into the bottom-right corner with the Newcastle number one rooted. Tensions continued to mount as Pickford remained unbeaten, despite facing four big chances for the Toon as they eventually underperformed a 1.27 xG. However, pressure thinned as news seeped through that Manchester United had put two past 10-man Aston Villa, keeping them in the Europa League spot. As said, Newcastle qualify for the Champions League as the final team in the top five, while this win keeps Everton in 13th. Thank you for joining us today, goodbye!

On another look, that penalty claim saw Schar flick the ball onto Livramento's arm. That's the dealbreaker, as it would've been a harsh decision to give. He knew nothing about it.

Newcastle United vs Everton

17:11

Ndiaye somehow beats four Newcastle players as he is forced backwards and then loops back on himself over halfway to spark a move down the right. Harrison is found and crosses powerfully. It looks to hit the arm of Livramento and the visitors want a penalty! The VAR has had a look, but the arm is deemed to be in a natural position.

Substitution Anthony Michael Gordon Joseph George Willock

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:58

Newcastle need to rise to the mounting pressure in the second half and regain focus on their goal of European qualification. A reminder, while the home fans are looking at other scores, the hosts can seal their Champions League spot with a win. With this, they'll need to test Pickford further and work above their xG of 0.68. They must also be wary of the travelling Toffees, who have looked sharp in places to register a 0.24 xG.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:55

A frustrating first half comes to a close at St. James' Park, as Newcastle and Everton remain locked together at 0-0. The hosts are yet to click into gear against their stubborn opponents, yet have offered the clearest cut chances. Early pressure threatened to bear fruit as Livramento crossed for Barnes in the 27th minute. However, the midfielder's touch was poor and into the arms of a grateful Pickford. Four minutes later, the former Sunderland man continued a pantomime villain role, adding some fine saves to his collection of boos and jeers after his former side just sealed promotion to the first tier. First, the keeper parried away a Tonali long-range strike from the bottom-right corner, before getting back up to deny Isak. Five minutes later, the Toffees' keeper was alive to tip over from Botman's header. In the following melee, the keeper then did brilliantly to prod another Botman effort round the base of the right post with a stretched left leg. While the visiting stopper was most active, Newcastle were reminded of Everton's offensive threat just before the break. Mykolenko crossed from the left and found Alcaraz. He headed on target, forcing Pope into a fine fingertip save.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:48

HALF-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 0-0 EVERTON

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:47

After some intuitive play from Guimaraes to keep the ball in play, Newcastle continue and breach the Everton area. Barnes, however, stumbles over the ball and can't keep it from crossing the right byline.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:45

Tonali's corner goes over everyone until Isak gets it under control. He runs out of the box and plays it to Gordon, whose shot is blocked. However, the referee's whistle has gone. The Italian's initial corner had actually swirled out of play and then back in.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:43

Ndiaye plays in Gueye on the right, yet the ball gets stuck under his feet and he hits the ball easily back to Pope. Newcastle then make a move forward, and the play culminates with a corner on the right.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:42

From the corner after Pope's save, Beto rises highest to nod over.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:41

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:39

Newcastle have two corners from the right and Keane knocks the first behind, before the second sees Pickford save a shot from Botman with a prodded left foot at his near post!

Newcastle United vs Everton

Yellow Card Fabian Lukas Schär

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:39

A dangerous Newcastle corner comes in from the left, and Botman's header into the turf, forcing Pickford to tip over!

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:38

Newcastle have won their final league game in eight of the last 10 seasons (D1 L1), with the exceptions being a 3-1 loss against Liverpool (2019-20) and a 1-1 draw with Chelsea (2022-23).

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:36

Young gives away something of a soft foul on Gordon. However, he only feels hard done by for a moment, as the resulting delivery is too hard and easily dealt with.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:33

PICKFORD DOUBLE SAVE! Tonali smacks a dipping low effort from range, forcing Pickford to parry out of the bottom-right corner! Isak's on the rebound and the keeper saves again!

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:32

Schar goes for another long diagonal for Livramento to chase. However, Pickford remains unbothered to claim. He then tries to pelt long for Harrison, but the momentum at both ends stalls.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:30

Tonali steps up a gear as he strides into the right of the Everton penalty area. He looks to cross low, but it's straight at Keane. It's then cleared before Schar and Beto collide in midair to bring a stoppage.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:29

Livramento beats Harrison and crosses from Newcastle's left. It's a teasing delivery that evades everyone until Barnes meets it with a touch that trickles to a grateful Pickford! Close!

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:27

The hosts' set-piece comes in and gets cleared. The resulting ball has Pickford diving on it as news filters through that Manchester City have taken the lead away at Fulham.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:26

Garner goes for a long throw-in from the left, yet Newcastle head out. The resulting skirmish sees the hosts fail to clear. Garner strikes on target! Pope parries away, and the Magpies counter!

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:25

Yellow Card Idrissa Gana Gueye

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:25

Everton win a free-kick in a promising area about 40 yards out as Beto is brought down by Guimaraes. It may just be out of shooting range, but it's not stopped Alcaraz from taking a look. He goes for it and makes Pope carry out a routine save down to his right. Speculative.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:22

Ndiaye tries to slot Mykolenko in down the left touchline. Murphy tracks the run well, though, and plays the ball back to Pope. Beto stalks the keeper, and the resulting kick is rushed and swirling before Everton press the ball out of play for a home throw-in.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:21

Murphy misjudges a long ball, and Mykolenko can bring it down behind him. Ndiaye looks to get a move going, but Newcastle defend stubbornly before breaking themselves. Tonali crosses dangerously from the right, and Pickford has to come off his goalline to punch away.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:19

Up the other end, Newcastle manage to set Gordon away down the left. He bolts towards the byline, yet his final ball across is behind and floats onto the roof of Pickford's net.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:19

Everton win a corner on the right now, as they look to respond to Newcastle's early pressure. Can they do a better job with the delivery? Harrison swings it over, but Garner can't keep it in as it loops just too far.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:16

The Newcastle corner is a disappointing one. Gueye charges down Tonali after a short effort is wasted.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:16

Schar pings a lovely long ball from right centre-back to Gordon on the left. Harrison tracks the former Toffee back and gives the hosts a corner on the left.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:14

Ndiaye does excellently well to ball roll and jink past Murphy on Everton's left flank. He then pops it to Alcaraz, yet the Argentine's shot is tame from range and dribbles lamely wide of Pope's right post.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:13

Beto tustles and squeezes past Botman on the left byline and comes infield to feed Ndiaye. The Senegalese shoots, yet is blocked off instantly at the edge of the box by Burn.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:11

Everton win a free-kick in a promising area. However, despite having Keane and co. up from the back, Garner goes short and eventually botches the move. In the next phase, Garner breaks down the left for the visitors. Again, he halts momentum as he could debatably play in Beto a little quicker. Newcastle get it away comfortably.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:10

Murphy tries to loft a speculative ball over from the right for a forward-darting Livramento from the left wing. Pickford comes and claims simply. The England man is yet to be challenged properly.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:09

Sunderland fan and former player Pickford receives the ball from Keane. He is booed and jeered heavily before playing the ball up the pitch. He'll no doubt be expecting more of that today.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:07

After a formative Everton move with Beto and Gueye gets pulled back for a foul from the latter, Newcastle come forward with Isak. Gordon is then found inside from the left, but can only blaze his effort from range comfortably over.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:06

Tonali rolls the free-kick for Murphy to cross from the right. Isak is the target, but Mykolenko heads behind. Tonali's corner from the right is initially cleared, but the Magpies win it back.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:04

Barnes makes early positive movements down the right before flashing a low ball in. Everton have to scramble it away. In the next phase, Guimaraes is fouled by Alcaraz.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:04

As said previously, Newcastle know just what's at stake today. With next season in mind in particular, the topic of Sunderland's recent promotion via the playoffs has been breached, with Mackem Pickford getting booed already in the warm-up.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:02

Off we go on Tyneside!

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:02

'Hey Jude' welcomes the two sets of players to the turf as a superb 'NUFC' made up of flags sits centre stage. The message is loud and clear, with one banner in particular from the home faithful. "You entered the pitch as players, you left it as legends." The two captains come together now with referee Harrington for the coin toss. It looks as though Newcastle will kick us off, playing from left to right.

Newcastle United vs Everton

16:01

Today's referee is Tony Harrington. He leads the teams out for his 18th Premier League appearance of the season after he was the man in the middle for Nottingham Forest's 2-2 draw with Leicester on the 11th of May. St. James' Park is a typically excitable, yet nervy arena. The hosts know that a win is enough. In the ample words of BBC Sport's chief football writer, Phil McNulty, "the whole of Tyneside can reach out and touch the golden ticket that gives entry to the Champions League. Can Everton spoil the party? It's sure to be an exciting watch.

Newcastle United vs Everton

15:45

Michael Keane starts at the back for Everton, replacing the injured Jarrad Branthwaite, while Carlos Alcaraz comes in for Abdoulaye Doucoure, who leaves the club at the end of the season. Jack Harrison also starts, with Dwight McNeil dropping to the bench.

15:35

Newcastle United host Everton in the North East today, as the Premier League’s 2024-25 campaign comes to its conclusion. Champions League qualification is still up in the air for the Magpies, but the permutations remain simple for Eddie Howe's men. Win, and UCL football will be theirs, but any slip-ups against the Toffees will give the teams around them an advantage. Newcastle are one of five teams that still have the chance to qualify for Europe’s elite competition on the final day, with Manchester City big favourites to make it. Today’s hosts, Chelsea, and Aston Villa, are all level on 66 points. It’s still all to play for as far down as seventh, where Nottingham Forest have one point less. All teams will be vying for dropped points. Newcastle haven’t made it easy for themselves this afternoon, as a narrow 1-0 defeat at Arsenal last weekend means the hosts will be sweating over their final league position. On the contrary, 13th-placed Everton come into this one off the back of a routine 2-0 success over Southampton and look set to cruise to the finish after their emotional Goodison goodbye last weekend.
