Bruce had Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock on the bench as back-up in the event the tie does not go according to plan.

Returning Burnley man Aaron Lennon started for the visitors, with Nathan Collins and Wayne Hennessey made debuts for the Clarets.

"We have a squad for a reason, but we need to keep them all happy and some of them need games to keep them match fit and to stake a claim for the weekend and the Premier League games to come.

"But, make no mistake, the starting XI and bench will be strong and will be capable of getting through to the next stage."
