Newcastle United v Tottenham suspended amid medical emergency

Newcastle United's home clash with Tottenham Hotspur has been suspended for after a fan was seemingly taken ill in the stands.

Play was stopped just before half-time after Tottenham players made referee Andre Marriner aware of an incident in the East Stand at St James' Park, which then caused play to be paused.

The exact nature of the incident isn't clear, although Spurs players were seen ushering medical staff onto the pitch, one of whom was seen carrying a defibrillator.

An announcement was then made on the stadium tannoy, informing supporters that the game was being suspended due to a 'medical emergency', with Marriner then leading both sets of players off the pitch.

Play was eventually restarted after the supporter was successfully removed from the ground my medical staff.

Reports from the north east then claimed that the supporter was "stabilised and on their way to hospital" shortly before play resumed.

Spirits were high among the home support, with this being the first game under Newcastle's new ownership, with fans creating a carnival atmosphere at St James' Park.

The hosts were handed a dream start when Callum Wilson netted after just two minutes before goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane put Spurs 2-1 in front shortly before the incident.

Son Heung Min then added a third shortly after play resumed, while Eric Dier's own goal handed Newcastle a late consolation as Spurs emerged with a 3-2 win.
