Newcastle United U23s learn their play-off semi-final opponents as young Magpies target promotion

Newcastle United will take on Reading in the play-off semi-finals as the Magpies look to secure promotion to Division One of Premier League 2.

The Magpies' second string ended the regular-league season in fourth place - and, with Wolverhampton Wanderers having secured the solitary automatic-promotion spot on goal-difference from Southampton, Newcastle claimed the third Division Two play-off spot.

As a result, Ben Dawson's side will travel to the Madejski Stadium in May - although the time and date of the fixture is yet to be confirmed - for the single-leg play-off, which has to be decided on the night, meaning there could be extra-time and penalties if necessary.

The winner of Reading vs Newcastle will then take on Southampton or Aston Villa, who will contest the other semi-final, for a place in Division One of Premier League 2 for the 2019/20 campaign.

Back in 2017, the young Magpies advanced to the play-off final, but were defeated at St James' Park by Villa.

But United's reserves have enjoyed a magnificent campaign this term, reaching the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy - before being defeated by Sunderland's first team - while they will also contest the Premier League Cup final in the coming weeks against either Swansea City or Everton.

Silverware would certainly be welcomed by the young Magpies, but the priority for the coming weeks is attempting to secure promotion via the play-offs - a target which appeared highly unlikely at the start of the season.
