Newcastle United U18s 4-1 Leeds United U18s: FA Youth Cup progress

Newcastle United booked their place in the last 16 of the FA Youth Cup after a resounding victory against Leeds United.

On a day in which Under-18s coach Neil Winskill got his tactics spot on, the young Magpies made no mistake in front of goal as Dylan Stephenson's first half hat-trick paved the way into round five.

It means Newcastle will now face Watford at home with the game likely to be staged at St James' Park.

After a couple of early saves from Toon goalie Max Thompson, Newcastle took control of the game.

The Magpies took the lead when Stephenson pounced and applied a finish from close range with his left foot after 18 minutes to beat Leeds goalkeeper Dani van den Heuvel.

It could have been 2-0 when Elliot Anderson struck a shot that was saved by the keeper but Joe White's effort was blocked on the line.

However, that second strike did arrive when Stephenson unleashed a shot that flew past Van den Heuvel to put United into what looked like an excellent position two minutes before the break.

But Leeds responded straight away when Joseph Snowdon pulled one back after good work from Leeds' £225,000 signing from Motherwell Stuart McKinstry.

There was still time for another goal before the interval.

Some great work from skipper Anderson picked out Stephenson again who poked home.

Anderson struck a free-kick from long range after the break but the ball landed on the roof of the net.

The talented forward Anderson then weaved into the danger area and struck the ball against the post as Newcastle continued to dominate following a run down the right.

Newcastle all but secured their place in round five on 64 minutes after White's driving run forward which saw him make a couple of stepovers before slamming home to make it 4-1.

The former Carlisle kid evaded a couple of fouls before powering into the net.

White was replaced for the final 20 minutes as Kyle Crossley was handed a run out at Whitley Park.

Leeds almost pulled one back with 13 minutes left when Ronnie McGrath hit the crossbar.

Nathan Carlyon drilled a powerful effort at the goalkeeper in the closing stages but the Leeds goalie held firm.

Were Newcastle to get past Watford in round five they would again have a home tie in the quarter-finals against Aston Villa or Burton Albion.

But triumphant coach Winskill will be eager to take one round at a time.

UNITED: Thompson, Oliver, J.Scott, Carlyon, Barclay, Nicholson, White (Crossley 70), Miley, Stephenson, Anderson (Huntley 86), de Bolle (Thomson 80)

Subs: Stewart, Banda, Thomson, Gilchrist, Harrison.
