Newcastle United transfers state of play: Four other fluid deals still active amid Tonali chase

Newcastle United have been in Italy to close in on the signing of Sandro Tonali with the Magpies committed to getting Eddie Howe players through the door in good time for the start of pre-season training.

The Tonali deal would tick the box of a defensive midfielder added to the ranks and get Newcastle's summer off to a flying start in terms of senior transfers. Newcastle are also still keen to add defensive options and attacking flair to their squad too.

Here's a look at where Newcastle could potentially go next in their search for new talent and where things stand on other possible deals. Howe is ideally looking to add new stars to the squad in time for pre-season, if not the Premier League's big kick off on August 12.

James Maddison

Maddison was whisked through a different exit at Old Trafford on Monday night after England's 7-0 win over North Macedonia. He was diverted away from the media where he would have been asked questions on his future.

In fairness to Maddison, he didn't get on the pitch and England officials were focused on putting up players who'd been involved. The Maddison deal has not really moved since last week but could come alive at any stage.

Newcastle have put forward what they see as a fair price but Leicester are holding out for up to £60million despite the attacker having just a year left on his current deal. Maddison is admired by Newcastle but he's not the only player on their list.

Dominik Szoboszlai

The Hungary skipper remains on United's rader but a £61million release clause hovers around the deal. There is a suggestion from the RB Leipzig end that it expires at the end of this month.

But Newcastle are yet to submit any type of bid and so far the Szoboszlai deal has been a series of enquiries on a fair price. Liverpool are also credited with interest in the 22-year-old.

The midfielder played for his country twice in Euro 2024 qualifying last week with Hungary on course for the finals in Germany next year. It's that type of tournament that would see his price rise but he is contracted to Leipzig until 2026 and they ultimately hold the cards on his future.

Joachim Andersen

Another name that has been thrown in to the mix in the last couple of days. The Crystal Palace centre-back has been watched by the Magpies so there is some interest.

But there has been no bid or even contact with the Eagles on a price at this stage. The right-footed centre-back is valued at more than £25million by Palace.

Josh Griffiths

The Newcastle goalkeeper situation is an interesting one with Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka the senior stoppers. Mark Gillespie has signed an extension while Loris Karius has been offered a new deal too.

Karl Darlow is due to return but has been linked with a move to Middlesbrough. Dan Ashworth is no stranger to West Brom and Griffiths' agency Unique Sports Group have strong links with Newcastle.

After impressive loans at Portsmouth and Cheltenham he progressed to play in the Championship with the Baggies last term. He would be seen as one for the future at Newcastle and could even be bought and loaned out.
