Newcastle United transfer target Harvey Barnes "rested" in Leicester City friendly defeat

Harvey Barnes was not involved in Leicester City's friendly against Peterborough United this afternoon as the Foxes commenced their pre-season schedule.

The friendly encounter took place at Leicester's training ground and ended in a 2-1 win for Posh but new City boss Enzo Maresca used 22 players but Barnes sat out. Barnes is the subject of interest from Newcastle United but the Magpies are yet to submit any cash offers.

The England international has trained as normal this week despite intense talk over the weekend that Newcastle were closing in on his signature. But suggestions a deal was close were played down by the Foxes earlier this week and for now he remains a Leicester player with two years left on his deal.

After losing to Peterborough, Leicester stated this afternoon: "Harvey Barnes and Marc Albrighton were rested". West Ham are also said to be interested in Barnes and they could soon have funds to spend after Declan Rice's £105million deal goes through.

Leicester next have a friendly against Northampton Town away from home on Saturday at Sixfields before they head off to Thailand for pre-season. The East Midlands side will be in the Far East at the same time Newcastle are in the United States on tour.

As of this afternoon, neither Newcastle or West Ham had placed a bid for the winger. “The market is open, anything can happen. We can bring in players, but at the same time, we can sell players," new boss Maresca said last week.
