Newcastle United transfer rumours: Trippier fee agreed and Magpies tracking £3million striker

Your latest Newcastle United transfer rumours on Wednesday, 5 January.

Newcastle agree deal in principle with Atletico Madrid for Kieran Trippier

Newcastle United have agreed a "deal in principle" for England full-back Kieran Trippier with Atletico Madrid.

The 31-year-old is scheduled to jet into Newcastle tomorrow morning and hold talks on personal terms but a £15million fee, that could rise to around £25million after add ons, has been verbally agreed between the two clubs.

Newcastle have been in talks with Trippier's people since they took control of the club in October but having worked with him before Eddie Howe needed no persuading to sign the full-back who he once managed at Burnley.

Sources close to Trippier say that he has been waiting for the deal to get the green light but is keen on the move to Tyneside despite the club's precarious position.

Newcastle are confident of landing Trippier today with a medical booked and club staff on standby to welcome the full-back.

Magpies plot '£3million hijack' of Zenit St. Petersburg striker

Newcastle are keeping a close eye on Zenit St Petersburg striker Sardar Azmoun.

That's according to the Daily Mail who claim the Iranian forward is attracting interest from Ligue 1 side Lyon, but the French outfit would only be willing to part with £3million for the striker.

The 27-year-old is out of contract with the Russian side and has impressed against Chelsea and Juventus in the Champions League so far this season.

Lyon's reluctance to stump up any more cash has 'left the door ajar' for Newcastle, according to the report, with the Magpies believed to be in the market for a short term Callum Wilson replacement.

The striker limped out of the Toon's 1-1 draw with Manchester United at St. James' Park and is expected to be ruled out for a few months.

Newcastle 'discuss' move for Norwich City defender

Newcastle United have 'discussed' a potential move for Norwich City defender Max Aarons, according to The Telegraph.

The Magpies are on the brink of making Kieran Trippier their first signing under the new regime which may rule out a move for Aarons, at least in the short run.

The England youth international is highly thought of across Europe, with the Canaries defender once on Barcelona's radar after an impressive season in the Premier League.

Interestingly, Rio Ferdinand tipped Newcastle to make a move for the Norwich defender in the wake of the Saudi led takeover back in November.

Now Eddie Howe's side have 'held discussions' over a potential move for the Canaries full-back.
