Newcastle United transfer rumours as European duo identified on Magpies summer transfer wishlist

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Wednesday, February 16.

Gnabry on Newcastle radar

The summer transfer window could work out to be the biggest in Newcastle history, especially if Eddie Howe is able to keep his side in the Premier League this season.

One of many players being linked with a big-money move is Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry who has played for both Arsenal and West Brom previously.

According to Fichajes, he is generating interest from the Premier League as his contract with the German champions is due to expire in June 2023.

The price quoted by the Spanish outlet is £60m but, given the situation regarding his future, it is hard imagine the Magpies would be willing to pay an amount like that for a player who would be free a year later.

Toon to increase Nunez approach

Howe was keen to bring in a couple of attacking reinforcements throughout January but Chris Wood was the only striker who joined the club.

The plan was to pair the former Burnley frontman with a younger strike partner and Darwin Nunez was one of those targeted to play that role.

However, Benfica were unwilling to sell as the 22-year-old has been their stand-out player so far this season with 23 goals in 27 games in all competitions.

Portuguese outlet Record have claimed that Newcastle will bid as much as €60m for the youngster which is €10m more than they offered in January.

Benfica are said to be holding out for nearer €80m with a number of Europe’s biggest clubs weighing up offers when the summer transfer window opens.

Fabian Ruiz wants Spain switch over Tyneside move

Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz has also been linked with a move to the Premier League in the last few months with Newcastle, unsurprisingly, being named amongst the interested teams.

Arsenal and Manchester United are said to be monitoring his situation, as per calciomercato, but the player himself wants a move back to his home country.

Ruiz came through the academy at Real Betis and has earned 15 caps for Spain. He is hopeful that he will attract the interest of either Real Madrid or Barcelona as it has always been his dream to represent one of the two La Liga giants.
