Newcastle United transfer news, rumours, gossip and deals from deadline day

Newcastle United were one of the busiest club's transfer deadline day.

The club smashed their club-record signing, with the addition of Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United for a fee of £21m. That easily surpasses the £16.5m Newcastle spent to sign Michael Owen from Spanish giants Real Madrid all the way back in 2005.

Monaco defender Antonio Barreca also joined, this time on loan, from Ligue 1 strugglers Monaco.

Good morning and welcome to The Independent's live coverage of Newcastle United's deadline day business on the final day of the January transfer window.

Following Rafael Benitez's threat to walk out on the club if certain transfer targets aren't brought in today, all eyes are on Mike Ashley to see who he can bring in - if anyone - to improve their chances of staying in the Premier League.
Newcastle United fans have not had a lot to get excited about of late, but after beating Manchester City last night, it looks like the club is ready to break its transfer record within the next 15 hours.

After it emerged on Tuesday that Miguel Almiron is set to move from Atlanta United to the Premier League, video footage has emerged of the midfielder arriving in Newcastle, courtesy of Sky Sports.

It's understood that the 24-year-old will move for a club-record fee in the region of £20m, making him more expensive than the £16m that Newcastle paid Real Madrid for Michael Owen in 2005.
A double signing for Newcastle?

Antonio Barreca is undergoing a medical at Newcastle as we type. His signing is expected to be announced later this afternoon and with Miguel Almiron will be a big boost to Newcastle's squad.

Another potential move is with Isaac Hayden.

The mid-fielder had a great game against Manchester United on Wednesday night but he is reportedly looking for a move away from the club for family reasons.

Sky Sports News reports that Aston Villa are keen to bring Hayden to the midlands with a possible deal today.

More potential signings for Newcastle.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle are in talks to bring Nantes winger Anthony Limbombe and Benfica's Andreas Samaris to St James' Park.

More updates to follow but Rafa Benetiz is reportedly very keen to sign Limbombe.

Antonio Barreca's deal is all but done, we're just waiting for an official announcement.

It is reportedly a £1 million loan deal with Monaco with the option to make the move permanent in the summer.

Salomon Rondon might extend his stay at St James' Park as Newcastle look to extend his loan contract for another year.

They're are reportedly in talks with West Brom to extend Rondon's contract in exchange for Jacob Murphy travelling to the Hawthorns on loan this month.
It may just be the two signings for Newcastle today as talks with Benfica over Andreas Samaris seem to have stalled.
Antonio Barreca completes his move to Newcastle!

Confirmation comes in with the price at £1 million for a one-year loan deal with the option of a £9 million permanent option to buy in the summer.

Miguel Almiron's move is yet to be confirmed but reports say it is only a matter of dotting the 'I's' and crossing the 'T's'.

Newcastle land first transfer deadline day signing

The 23-year-old left-back arrives on a short-term deal until the end of the season with an option to buy
Could there be a surprising move away from Newcastle for Matt Ritchie?

According to TEAMTalk, the 29-year-old is keen to move back down South. His departure would certainly be a big loss for Newcastle but is their enough time left in the window for it to happen?

Speculation on Joselu? Unwarranted apparantly.
Miguel Almiron's move to Newcastle is still ongoing but looks likely to be completed before the deadline.

Isaac Hayden, who wants to leave the club, looks to be staying after negotiations with Benfica over Andreas Samaris have stalled.

Newcastle haven't given up on getting their man though and a deal could still be done today.

Miguel Almiron is confirmed!

Newcastle United have shattered their record signing as Miguel Almiron joins the club for a reported £21 million from Atlanta United.

Newcastle fans had to wait 14 years to break the club record signing... have they got a good deal?

Callum Roberts has joined Colchester on loan.

The 21-year-old winger will be out on loan until the end of the season.

The latest on Miguel Almiron’s move to Newcastle United, from Jack Watson:

Newcastle have broken their transfer record and completed the signing of Miguel Almiron on a five-and-a-half-year from MLS side Atlanta United.

The deal to bring the 24-year-old to the Premier League, understood to be in the region of £20m, tops the £16m that was paid to Real Madrid to sign Michael Owen in 2005.

Newcastle’s shock 2-1 win against champions Manchester City lifted the side to 14th in the table but did not ease the fan discontent at the owner.

Anti-Mike Ashley chants were audible throughout St James’ Park and banners encouraging him to leave were held up in the 11th minute, marking the Newcastle owner’s 11 years at the club.
Rafa Benitez has been chasing Almiron all January and here's his reaction to getting Newcastle's record signing:

"We were following Miguel Almiron for a while. We saw a player with some pace in attack, who can play behind the striker.

"We have someone who can score goals and give assists. We know that MLS is a different challenge to the Premier League but he has the potential to do what we are expecting, and what we need.

"From talking to the lad, you can tell that he is really focused and wants to do well. He wants to be successful and he wants to help the team, to score goals and give assists if it is possible.

"His impact in MLS has been really good - he's been one of the best players this year - and hopefully he can give us more competition and more quality in the final third.

"I am pleased that the hard work behind the scenes has ended positively and I thank everyone for their efforts."

Record Newcastle signing Miguel Almiron has been speaking to Sky Sports: "I wasn't thinking about a lot. I am just really happy that Rafa Benitez and the club wanted me in the first place.

"I am a quick player and I try to work together with my teammates. I don't decide [whether he will start against Tottenham] but I am working very hard to be able to play but I don't think that I can expect to start.

"I am very happy to be here. I want to work together with the manager."

Atlanta United President Darren Eales released a statement on the transfer of Miguel Almiron. Here's what it said:

“First and foremost, we want to thank Miguel for two incredible years with Atlanta United, culminating in winning MLS Cup last season.

“When we recruited Miguel, we knew he was a fantastically talented player, who could achieve success in Atlanta, develop his game further, and, if he wished, move to a top European League.

“Two years later, we couldn’t be happier with what Miguel has contributed to the club, and that he is realising his dream of playing in the Premier League.

“He is a committed athlete who gives his all to the game and is loved by our fans as a player and as a person. We wish him nothing but the best in his career.

“This is also a landmark day for Atlanta United. We not only shattered the league transfer fee record, but gave proof of concept for our original club model of signing top young players and giving them a chance to thrive and develop.”
