Newcastle United transfer news as Magpies tipped for Nicolo Zaniolo chase

Here are the Newcastle United transfer rumours and gossip on Monday, January 16.

Newcastle United looking to 'bulk up' academy after 'years of neglect'

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are believed to be trying to sign 'a number' of youth prospects in order to 'bulk up' their academy which has been 'neglected for years'.

One of their main targets is 16-year-old Dundee United midfielder Rory MacLeod, who has been on the radar of other Premier League clubs such as Brighton.

Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie told GiveMeSport that MacLeod is just one of many youth signings that the Magpies are trying to make this month and in the summer.

"I think he’s just another one for the youth team. They’re trying to really bulk up the youth side because the academy at Newcastle has been neglected for years.

"What they want to do is just have a more competitive under-23 team and they want to have a more competitive academy and better youth players.

"He’s one of a number that they’re looking at. I heard about that one last week. But he’s certainly not for the first team."

Newcastle United tipped to target Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo amid Premier League links

Newcastle United are reportedly scheming up a move for Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo this summer after he was linked to both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur this month.

According to Italian outlet Corriere della Sera, the Magpies have been asking for information on the 23-year-old winger in recent weeks as Eddie Howe tries to line up another new St. James' Park arrival.

With the rumours constantly circulating in the Italian press and after refusing to sign a new contract with the Serie A outfit, Zaniolo was booed off by Roma fans following their 1-0 win over Genoa on Thursday, making his exit seem even more likely.

The 23-year-old has been one of Italy's most exciting talents over the last few years but back-to-back long-term injuries has left him on the sidelines for a majority of the last two seasons.
