Newcastle United transfer news as Eddie Howe makes Premier League star 'prime January target'

Here are the Newcastle United transfer rumours and gossip on Wednesday, December 28.

Eddie Howe makes Premier League rival's star 'prime target' for January

Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have reportedly made Chelsea midfielder Jorginho their 'prime target' for the January transfer window ahead of next month.

The Italian international's contract is running out in the summer, meaning he could be leaving Stamford Bridge for a lower price if he's unwilling to sign a new deal.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are searching for a deep-lying playmaker - a role that Jorginho has made his own while with the Blues, and he has now popped onto their radar.

If Chelsea don't want to let a player that they signed for £57 million go for free in the summer, then selling him at a discounted price would potentially be the best course of action - something Newcastle would certainly prefer.

Newcastle United 'actively working' to secure Brazilian wonderkid deal

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United are 'actively working' to land Brazilian 18-year-old Matheus Franca in the January transfer window.

As the Magpies continue to soar up the Premier League table after Monday afternoon's 3-0 win over Leicester City, it's possible manager Eddie Howe would start investing into the long-term aspect of the club.

Speaking on his Here We Go podcast, Romano believes that's certainly a possibility and there wouldn't be many players better for that train of thought than Franca.

“Keep an eye on Matheus Franca. This boy I mentioned many times, it was a [few] years ago. This boy from Flamengo is one of my favourites in South America, now Newcastle are actively working to sign him, but they have to make a decision.”
