Newcastle United transfer gossip as 'target's' new contract includes clause

Here are the latest Newcastle United transfer rumours for Thursday, September 23.

Key clause in Newcastle-linked midfielder's contract revealed

Newcastle United-linked midfielder Lewis O'Brien has signed a new contract at Huddersfield Town which is said to include a buyout clause, according to reports.

Leeds United were heavily linked with the 22-year-old throughout the summer window but the Magpies were also said to be in the hunt for the midfielder, although a move to the Premier League never materialised.

He has since penned a new four-year deal at the John Smith's Stadium, but it reportedly includes a buyout clause which could leave Huddersfield defenceless against bids in the future if they meet requirements.

Backlash suggests Newcastle dodged bullet over former forward

Newcastle United may have dodged a bullet in not pursuing former forward Salomon Rondon, as he has been subjected to fierce criticism from Everton supporters.

The 32-year-old impressed during a loan spell at St James' Park in the 2018/19 campaign and conceded he would be open to a return as recently as September last year.

As reported by the Guardian, he said: "But if in January, I had a chance to sign again for Newcastle, I would do it for sure because they gave me a lot and I felt so much when I was at St James'.

However, he never did return and has since been reunited with Rafael Benitez at Everton.

However, as reported by Geordie Boot Boys, Toffees supporters have called his fitness into question after he struggled the club's Carabao Cup defeat to QPR.

@sean_efc31 tweeted: "I don't think I've seen a player look as unfit as Rondon did tonight."
