Newcastle United transfer gossip as Nice target Jamal Lewis, Magpies push for Gallagher and Everton eye Almiron

Your Newcastle United transfer round-up for Thursday, August 25.

Nice target Lewis

Newcastle left-back Jamal Lewis has emerged as a potential target for Ligue 1 outfit OGC Nice, according to French publication L’Equipe. The Northern Irish international fits Lucien Favre’s profile and Nice are expected to intensify their pursuit of the 24-year-old.

The Eaglets have already signed Premier League title-winning goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and Wales international and former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey from Juventus.

They are also working on bringing Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe to the club on a season-long loan. Melvin Bard is the only senior left-back available to Favre, who will be keen to strengthen his side after failing to win any of his opening three league games (D1 L2).

Lewis joined Newcastle from Norwich City on a five-year deal in the summer of 2020 but has found his spell at St James’ Park hampered by injuries. He was left out of Eddie Howe’s Premier League squad for the second half of last season and missed the Magpies first three league games with injury.

Gallagher tempted by loan

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher is tempted by a loan move away from Stamford Bridge amid interest from the likes of Newcastle, West Ham United and Everton.

The Express claim that Gallagher is considering the prospect of a fifth loan away from Chelsea to boost his chances of being selected by England boss Gareth Southgate for the 2022 World Cup.

Luke Edwards of the Telegraph has reported that Newcastle are pushing hard to sign Gallagher. The midfielder featured from the bench in Chelsea’s first two league matches, before making his first start in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Leeds United.

Gallagher flourished on loan at Crystal Palace last term - scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 39 matches across all competitions. He has had previous loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Swansea City and West Brom respectively.

Everton target Almiron

The Guardian’s Ed Aarons claims that the Everton are interested in Almiron, although the Paraguayan international will only be allowed to leave Newcastle on a permanent deal.

Everton are thin on the ground in the final third following Richarlison’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s latest spell on the sidelines. They could also be set to lose Anthony Gordon, who is being linked with a £60million switch to Chelsea.

This has increased Frank Lampard’s need to bring in attacking reinforcements before the end of the transfer window. Almiron arrived at Newcastle from Atlanta United in January 2019 for a reported fee of £20million and has scored 15 times in 126 appearances for the Magpies.

Almiron scored six goals during pre-season and netted his first of the season in Newcastle’s 3-3 draw against Manchester City at St James’ Park on Sunday.
