Newcastle United 'tracking' League Two striker ahead of potential summer move

Newcastle United are reported to be tracking highly-rated youngster John McAtee of Scunthorpe United.

The 20-year-old only broke into the Iron first team on New Year's Day, and in the 10 appearances since has turned in impressive performances.

Registering two goals and two assists in that time, he has added to impressive displays for the side's Under-23 team - where it is thought McAtee first came to the attention of United when two teams met in November.

Our sister title Grimsby Live report that 'multiple sources' have confirmed Newcastle's interest.

McAtee netted the winner against Cheltenham Town over the weekend, and it is thought scouts from the Magpies were there to see the performance.

The striker only signed for the Iron in the summer on a one-year deal.

It is understood that there is an option to extend his contract, with Scunthrope likely to do so.
