Newcastle United told to swoop for Man City star after takeover

Newcastle United have been urged to mark their £305million takeover with a high-profile swoop that would have an impact on Manchester City's impending transfer plans.

Having coasted to a third Premier League title in four seasons, key figures responsible for incomings and outgoings at the Etihad Stadium made a move for £100million man Jack Grealish - but then failed in their follow-up pursuit for England captain Harry Kane.

In the midst of the transfer saga of the summer, Kane was ultimately priced out of a City switch by Tottenham.

An international teammate of those two, Raheem Sterling has been linked with a loan to cash-strapped Spanish giants Barcelona, meanwhile, after being forced to play second fiddle to Grealish - and others - at the start of this Premier League campaign.

The 26-year-old has played over 300 games since arriving at the Etihad Stadium from Liverpool in 2015 - but might he be the marquee signing Saudi-backed Newcastle are looking for?

Speaking on talkSPORT, pundit and former Republic of Ireland international Cascarino said: "If you look at other clubs, we are talking Man City and Chelsea, that had the investment - and Blackburn, you can go back there with Jack Walker. You probably go British and you try and buy a few British players.

"You go after some of the players that might not be... and I'll throw a name out there; Raheem Sterling.

Would you cash-in on Sterling next summer? Have your say in the comments section below.

"He might not be first choice at City, so can you snatch him away from Man City to get him to come to Newcastle? These are the British players you might get - and then you use the world market."

Cascarino added: "Go after the big clubs, some of the big players at big clubs.

"You can get them once they go slightly out of favour, but you still think they are a great player. I think it's a good idea to go down that road. It's not going to be overnight. It just won't happen like that, you have to build a football club here."
