Newcastle United told to make Alexandre Lacazette transfer decision ahead of January

Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette would be an 'amazing signing' for Newcastle United, according to pundit Kevin Phillips.

The French international recently revealed he is currently unhappy with his bit-part role in north London, having started just three times so far this season.

Lacazette's opening to the campaign was disrupted by a positive Covid-19 diagnosis, and an injury-time equaliser against Crystal Palace last Monday earned the 30-year-old a start in the Gunner's latest victory over Aston Villa.

However, the striker's contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in the summer, and the Magpies are one of a host of clubs linked with a move for the former Lyon forward.

Former Sunderland striker Phillips believes Lacazette has not received the 'credit he deserves' during his four-year stay so far at Arsenal, and believes Newcastle would 'reap the rewards' of luring the attacker to St James' Park.

He told Football Insider: “I have always been a big fan of Lacazette. I think he’s a great player. He would be an amazing signing for Newcastle.

“He needs to play week in, week out. I get the impression he feels he is not loved at Arsenal. Perhaps he feels he does not get the credit he deserves.

“In my opinion, he is a class player. If you played him week in, week out, you would reap the rewards. If I was a Newcastle fan and Lacazette came in, I’d be very excited. I know he is blessed with a lot of talent. He’d be a great signing in January.”
