Newcastle United told to issue 'hands off' warning to Man City over Bruno Guimaraes transfer

Steve McManaman has insisted that Newcastle United's financial situation means "they're in no need" to sell Bruno Guimaraes to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola's squad are reportedly keen on a summer transfer for Guimaraes and Newcastle will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of him. The Brazilian has been superb for Eddie Howe this season and is a large part of why the Magpies find themselves pushing for a spot in next season's Champions League.

Getting into Europe's premier competition would not only open doors for the club in the transfer window but it would also allow them to shut them on other clubs looking to pry away their top talent. This is apparently the case with Man City at the moment as they seemingly circle Guimaraes ahead of the summer transfer window.

But regardless of a top four finish, McManaman believes that the club's financial strength will mean that they can prevent the likes of Man City tempting Guimaraes away from St James' Park.

“I’d be very surprised if Newcastle United allowed him to leave, especially to Manchester City," he told Betfred. "Finances are supposedly not an issue now for Newcastle, so they’re in no need to sell their best players.

"If you’re building to become an even bigger club and to get back into European competition, then you don’t let your best players leave. I’d be very surprised if they were to ever let him go, especially to a Premier League rival like Manchester City."
